Bleacher Report's Damian Parson recently unveiled his list of six NFL rookies most likely to win the 2025 Defensive Rookie of the Year (DROY) award. His selections were based on a combination of projected playing time, scheme fit, and overall skill set.
"If all of these boxes are checked, it bodes well for rookies to hit the ground running towards the DROY award," Parson explained.
Among the standouts on Parson's list is San Francisco 49ers first-round pick Mykel Williams. The former Georgia defensive end reportedly impressed during a recent media-access practice session, showcasing his high-ceiling traits.
Parson projects Williams to have a significant role in Robert Saleh's defensive scheme and believes the rookie's elite physical tools make him an ideal fit. While Williams didn't post eye-popping sack numbers last season, he played through injury for much of the year, which may have impacted his production.
Parson is optimistic about Williams' potential within the 49ers' system, especially with room to grow as a pass rusher.
"The Georgia product is a floor-raising talent against the run," Parson wrote. "This is where his impact will be felt initially as a rookie. He will be paired with star defensive end Nick Bosa and returning defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. That bodes well for a developmental pass-rusher."
San Francisco's recent trade for former Eagles pass rusher Bryce Huff adds further depth to the defensive front. Fortunately, Williams isn't limited to the edge. His versatility allows him to slide inside, where he could exploit matchups.
"If the 20-year-old is deployed more as an interior rusher, it will create more advantageous matchups for him physically against less athletic and shorter-armed interior linemen," Parson noted.
He added, "Williams shouldn't worry about snap share because his run defense will more than likely place him close to a starting role during his rookie season. From there, he has to unleash his skill set and display why his ceiling is so high."
In addition to Williams, Parson listed the following top candidates for the 2025 Defensive Rookie of the Year award:
