After the New York Giants fell to 2-8 on the season via Sunday's 20-17 overtime loss to the lowly Carolina Panthers (3-7), one-time MVP and current NFL analyst Boomer Esiason said he felt Giants signal-caller Daniel Jones "is completely hamstrung mentally" and is dealing with "paralysis by analysis" this fall.
During the Monday edition of the WFAN afternoon show, Giants legend and current analyst Tiki Barber said it's time to explore what the other quarterback options on the roster can give.
“I don’t know, but I want to know," Barber said, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "I’d rather know. I’d rather find out. If you’re gonna lose games anyway, I’d rather find out. I think I’m done with DJ.”
"He’s developed a hitch in his throw now," Barber continued. "Before every throw, he’s doing this quick hitch. It’s why he’s late all the time...get the ball out of your hands."
Barber made a similar comment after Week 1 when he mentioned that Jones seemed to be "lacking confidence" and looked "unsure of what he’s doing out there sometimes." Jones had no such issues as he went 9-6-1 en route to guiding the 2022 Giants to a postseason berth and a road playoff win. He then received a new four-year contract in March 2023.
What will likely go down as the beginning of the end of Jones' Giants tenure occurred when he suffered the second neck-related injury of his career last season before he went down with a torn ACL. As recently as Monday, New York head coach Brian Daboll declined to either confirm or deny that Jones will remain the club's QB1 coming off the team's Week 11 bye.
Sitting Jones to keep him healthy would allow the club to escape his contract during the upcoming offseason. Daboll could turn to either primary backup Drew Lock or QB3 Tommy DeVito for the Week 12 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 24.
According to Pro Football Reference, Jones began Tuesday ranked 28th in the NFL with a 46.3 adjusted QBR and 31st with a 79.4 passer rating on the season. He tossed eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions over what could be his final 10 games as an active Giants signal-caller.
"I don’t think he gives you the best chance to win anymore," Barber added about Jones during the show segment.
It sounds like Daboll shares Barber's opinion.
