Why rookie QB isn't immediately challenging Lions' Jared Goff

After Detroit selected Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker in the NFL Draft, Jared Goff's job security came into question.

"I'm not ready to say Hooker is the QB of the future. Goff is the Lions guy until he isn't," wrote The Athletic's Colton Pouncy.

Others believe the Lions should ditch Goff and make Hooker the face of the franchise.

"He's got more talent than Goff," NBC Sports analyst and former NFL QB Chris Simms recently said on "Pro Football Talk." "He's a better thrower of the football; he's a better athlete. Goff is good, don't get me wrong. But still, if you go back in the year and watch the year, they have to manage Goff."

Two years remain on Goff's contract. The Lions have not extended him, but GM Brad Holmes recently told WXYT-FM in Detroit, "We've had dialogue with his agent, and we're in a good place."

Holmes managed the situation correctly. He should wait to extend Goff, who has a losing record in two seasons as the Lions starter (12-18-1).

Holmes should show interest in an extension, however.

Hooker isn't ready to start after suffering a torn ACL last season.

"This really is just a redshirt year for him," Lions HC Dan Campbell said on a recent episode of former NFL DE Chris Long's podcast "Green Light."

Last season, Goff reminded the NFL why he was a former No. 1 overall pick. He tied for the league's fifth-most passing TDs (29), leading Detroit to its first winning season since 2017.

So Goff should retain the starting role next season, and Detroit should develop Hooker as a contingency plan.
