Shortly after the Baltimore Ravens surprisingly parted ways with head coach John Harbaugh on Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter revealed that at least one team that doesn’t have a coaching vacancy reached out to Harbaugh’s agent.
Some quickly speculated that the Miami Dolphins were that team. It seems such individuals may have been correct.
"I'm told the Dolphins have been in touch on John Harbaugh, per league sources," NFL insider Josina Anderson shared on Wednesday morning. "It's my understanding Todd Monken could have a path to still be Harbaugh's OC (withstanding other opportunities) if Monken departs Baltimore with the arrival of the Ravens' new head coach."
On Tuesday afternoon, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that Harbaugh's "refusal to entertain any conversations about potentially moving on from offensive coordinator Todd Monken" was "a key pressure point" regarding the Ravens' decision to dismiss Harbaugh. A different report claimed that star quarterback Lamar Jackson and other Baltimore players "had doubts about whether or not they wanted to play for [Harbaugh] as their head coach."
Meanwhile, The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec mentioned in a piece published on Wednesday morning that "the dynamic between Harbaugh, offensive coordinator Todd Monken and star quarterback Lamar Jackson had grown awkward, particularly this season when there seemed to be weekly confusion about whether Jackson would or wouldn’t practice [amid Jackson's injury woes]."
Before Harbaugh became available, it was said that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross "hasn't fully decided" whether or not to retain current head coach Mike McDaniel. Even if Ross chooses to let McDaniel go, there's no guarantee Harbaugh would happily relocate to South Beach.
"It's also my understanding, though, that team quarterback situation will be a big factor in this ongoing decision and evaluation process," Anderson added about a possible Harbaugh-Dolphins marriage. Miami may move on from starter Tua Tagovailoa this offseason, and 2025 rookie Quinn Ewers is still an unknown commodity who made just three starts this season.
For what it's worth, Harbaugh allegedly "has a high regard" for New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. It's far too early to say if Dart's presence would cause Harbaugh to pick the Giants over the Dolphins.
