Lane Johnson Confirms Retirement Plans After 2026-27

The Philadelphia Eagles are looking into a major opportunity for 2026, but there is also a major black cloud looming overhead. 

When you look at the star Lane Johnson who is 36 years old, it’s about time the Eagles start preparing for life after Lane. Obviously there are five spots on the offensive line, but for the past 13 years Lane has been the staple for Philadelphia on the right tackle. 

Johnson just officially acknowledged that the 2026-27 will be his last in the NFL, and the Eagles despite having talented offensive lineman Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson, will be having a major sore spot without Johnson. 

“think just being honest and transparent about it allows me to be at ease, so to speak, and tell you where my head's at, what I'm looking forward to, and what I'm trying to soak in as this year winds down. It's refreshing. It's honest — I've had these conversations with my teammates, with Dom, with these guys. It's where I'm at at this point in my career." - Lane Johnson.

The Eagles are already undergoing massive changes this offseason, from new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, to life without star wide receiver AJ Brown, and putting much more pressure on quarterback Jalen Hurts. This team still is uber-talented for the 26-27 season, but the loss of Lane Johnson is going to hurt.

The positive side of things for Philadelphia is the fact that they have already had years to prepare and nonetheless have another year to prepare, especially given the 2027 offseason can be devoted in large part to rebolstering the offensive line. Johnson has been an absolute star for the Eagles, and while guys like Jason Kelce didn't get a fairytale ending, there is a chance that Johnson does. On the roster right now, there is not a perfect replacement, but they have a behemoth in Markus Bell, and once again, they have an entire offseason to fill that void.
