Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz suffered a serious knee injury during Sunday’s 31-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and it was confirmed Monday morning that he tore his ACL.
Ertz was hurt late in the third quarter while reaching for a pass on second-and-11 when he was hit in the right leg by Vikings safety Jay Ward. He was unable to put weight on the leg, required assistance to leave the field, and was soon carted to the locker room. He will undergo further imaging to confirm the full extent of the injury.
Ertz, 35, has been one of the most productive and durable players for Washington this season, compiling 49 receptions for 493 yards and four touchdowns. He also recently moved into fifth place on the NFL’s all-time receptions list for tight ends with 825 career catches. His loss leaves a significant void in the Commanders’ offense, removing one of the team’s veteran leaders and key offensive weapons.
The Commanders now face a difficult path forward as they navigate the remainder of the season without one of their most experienced offensive players. Ertz’s absence will force adjustments at tight end and on the offensive line, while Daniels’ injury history continues to be a concern. The team will have to rely on backups and younger players to step up as Washington attempts to remain competitive over its final five games.
