The Oilers completed the comeback and once again defeated their rivals the Los Angeles Kings in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Now it’s time to slay another dragon: the Vegas Golden Knights. The Oilers fell to the Golden Knights in six games back in the 2023 Postseason, and they’re not looking to go home early again. They are going to need help from certain spots in the lineup in order to keep their Cup run alive.
Now, obviously, they need contributions from the big dogs such as Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard, but that’s to be expected. You know what you’re getting from guys like that when you put them on the ice. However, there are other guys in the lineu p that not only need to make an impact, but could be keys to success for Edmonton in this series and moving forward in the playoffs.
Zach Hyman
Coming off 54 goals last season and a stellar postseason to follow, Zach Hyman has had a bit of a down season. He scored just 27 goals this past regular season, cutting his previous total in half. He wasn’t the only forward to struggle a bit, but his was the most notable. Moving past all of that, Hyman has stepped up his game to start off the playoffs. He’s done so in more ways than one.
Hyman sits in a familiar spot at fourth on the team in postseason points so far with five through six games. It’s been a nice start for him there, but that’s not all. As of May 3, he leads the NHL in the playoffs with 43 hits. He has been flying around, hammering everything in sight so far. That is going to be a key factor when going up against a team in Round 2 who they are k nown to play tight games against and where momentum means everything. If Hyman can keep up the offence and add in his aggressive play as well, he will be a massive threat all series long and beyond.
Darnell Nurse
A lifetime Oilers defenceman who seems to receive more criticism than praise is a prime candidate to be a pivotal piece for Edmonton in this series. Darnell Nurse had an up-and-down first-round series against the Kings, but he could be just the guy to step up for the Oilers’ defence in the coming weeks.
Despite being tied for dead-last on the team in the first round with a minus-3 rating, he ranks second on the entire team in ice time per game averaging just under 25 minutes a game. He is relied on heavily on the Oilers’ back end as a veteran and alternate captain. And with Mattias Ekholm missing extended time, the team badly needs the rest of the defencemen to step up and fill the void.
If Nurse can play steady, defence-minded hockey against a strong, offensive Vegas team, it could be a series shifter. He plays an aggressive style of defence that can get him into some trouble, but it can also pay off. He can also play very physical, which is something the team will need against a hard-hitting Vegas squad. Nurse was able to get away with some mistakes in Round 1 as the team was able to overpower LA, however, the Golden Knights are a much tighter team. He will need to be a leader if the Oilers want to advance.
Calvin Pickard
The most important piece to the Oilers’ puzzle lies in the goal crease. Calvin Pickard stepped in for a struggling Stuart Skinner towards the end of Game 2 against LA and never looked back. He backstopped four straight Edmonton wins and has become the unlikely hero the team needed. Now it’s time for him to take it to the next level, especially with the uncertainty of Skinner.
Pickard’s stats through his four starts may not look as pretty as some of the other goalies who have vaulted their teams to Round 2, however, that is not what it’s about in his case. He may not have made every save against the Kings, but he made the ones that counted. He was almost unbeatable in the third period of Game 6 with the Oilers looking to close out the series. He has the clutc h gene and makes timely saves for his team. This is exactly what they will need as the matchups only get tougher from here on out.
These veterans could make a huge impact on the next series for the Oilers. These guys are important, but of course, they will need everyone to show up in order to make a run. We will see who steps up when the chips are down in Vegas.

This move could serve as a reliable fallback option for the Jets' second-line winger position if Gustav Nyquist continues his slump from last season.' - Jake Tye Gustav Nyquist is recovering from a career-low 28-point season between Nashville and Minnesota, which has created uncertainty about whether the 35-year-old can bounce back with his new team. Should Nyquist not return to his 75-point self from a couple of years ago, Alex Tuch would be an excellent substitute. Drafted 18th overall by Minnesota in 2014, Tuch carved out a consistent four-year stretch with the Vegas Golden Knights, during which he received ample playoff experience. In Buffalo, he has elevated his game to new heights, culminating in a career-best 36-goal, 79-point effort in his first complete season. Despite having contract talks with the Sabres, uncertainty about his future could make him available. For Winnipeg, including a prospect like Nikita Chibrikov or Colby Barlow could be sufficient to get a deal done. Adding Tuch would provide the Jets with both insurance and a possible upgrade, keeping the top six a strength. If Nyquist struggles, Tuch's combination of scoring, versatility, and playoff savvy might be just what Winnipeg needs to remain among the Western Conference elite.

Multiple Vikings suffered injuries in preseason finale that could make a huge impact on 53-man roster while a disturbing trend continues
The preseason is the proving ground for young players, but it can be their worst nightmare at the same time. The final preseason game is the last chance for players to make a major impression on the coaching staff and front office. Unfortunately, for some players, they end up getting injured. That happened with multiple Minnesota Vikings in their 23-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans, and it could have a major impact on who makes the final 53-man roster at cutdown day. During the game, four Vikings ended up getting injured with different results. Those injuries could end up making things a little bit complicated for general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Minnesota Vikings injuries vs. Tennessee Titans EDGE Tyler Batty "Tyler Batty, pretty early there, you know, had a right knee that will evaluate via the MRI," said head coach Kevin O'Connell. Whenever you hear a coach say the player is going to have an MRI, it's usually not a good sign for them. Batty was not on a path to make the roster after an uninspiring preseason, and that could make it difficult for the Vikings to cut him, as you cannot cut an injured player without giving them an injury settlement. If the injury is serious, Batty will end up going on injured reserve. RB Zavier Scott Early on in the game, Scott suffered what O'Connell described as a right ankle injury. He didn't mention how severe it was, but he didn't return to the game after the injury. Scott finished the game with five carries for 28 yards, and has seemingly earned the RB3 job over Ty Chandler with his entire performance this year. DT Elijah Williams This is arguably the most difficult one of the group. During the beginning of the second half, Williams came up lame and ended up leaving the game. It's a brutal blow for Williams, as he's arguably had the best training camp of anyone with the Vikings. Could he end up like T.Y. McGill from a few years ago and not make the 53-man roster, but rather get an injury settlement? It's certainly possible, but if it's minor, Williams should be a near roster lock. QB Brett Rypien This one was the oddest of them all. Rypien was evaluated for a concussion after getting hit on the head, but it didn't draw a penalty. "Brett Rypien was evaluated for a concussion, but he returned," said O'Connell. "That was the play there, where, I believe the interception there, where, you know, he got hit in the head. It was enough to get evaluated for a concussion, but not enough to, you know, maybe draw a penalty on the play." It's wild that this happened once again, as the Vikings had that happen multiple times last season with Sam Darnold, and those ended up giving their opponents nine points. Thankfully, Rypien ended up being okay, but it's baffling how officials continue to miss it.
Reports: Red Sox Have 2 Options To Replace Walker Buehler
The Boston Red Sox ripped off the band-aid and made a difficult decision on Friday. There has been some chatter for a few weeks about the possibility of moving Walker Buehler out of the starting rotation. He actually has looked better lately than he did at the beginning of the season. But, his command was still shaky, including eight walks over his last 10 innings pitched, and Boston opted to move him out of the rotation. The Red Sox announced the decision on Friday, as shared by MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo. "Walker Buehler is going to the bullpen, Alex Cora announced," Cotillo said. "The starter for Monday is TBD. Cora said Buehler 'handled it like a professional.'" The Red Sox have two options to replace Walker Buehler Boston has two more games left in its series against the New York Yankees. Garrett Crochet is getting the ball on Saturday and will be followed by Dustin May on Sunday. On Monday, the Red Sox will begin a series against the Baltimore Orioles and this is when the club will have to make a decision. So, who could it be on the mound? Cotillo noted that Richard Fitts and Kyle Harrison are both options. "For Monday's outing, Richard Fitts and Kyle Harrison are the leading candidates to pitch," Cotillo said. "It'll likely depend on how the next few days go in NY. If Fitts pitches (in a multi-inning role), bet on Harrison to make that start. If not, Fitts is with the club and ready." Fitts is up with the team and it was initially reported that he was called up to help out in the bullpen. He hasn't been used out of the bullpen yet, so Monday certainly is a possibility. Harrison was the jewel of the Rafael Devers trade but hasn't made a start with Boston yet. Harrison has been down with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox and has a 3.69 ERA in 10 starts. At some point, Harrison is going to be a big piece for this rotation. Could that start on Monday?
