Once again, we’ll be looking at this week’s playoff odds for the Calgary Flames. This will be the last time we check in on odds, as the regular season is coming to an end in about nine days.
As for the playoffs, it isn’t looking promising for the Flames. The team is coming off a devastating overtime loss versus the Anaheim Ducks two days ago, as that was a game they needed to win in regulation. They now have only four games left in the season, and three of their opponents are playoff teams. Their competition in the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild are both tied at 93 points, as the Flames find themselves five points back.
Here’s what this week’s playoff odds for the Flames look like:
Site | Playoff odds |
MoneyPuck | 8.7% |
Hockey-Reference | 11.3% |
PlayoffStatus.com | 12% |
These week’s odds are very low, as the average across these three sites results in a 10.7% chance for the Flames to qualify for the postseason. At this point, the season is likely over for Calgary. Their loss to the Ducks threw a wrench in their plans, and the team desperately needed the two points.
The team doesn’t have much time left to make up the gap. Their season will end next Thursday in California against the Los Angeles Kings, and before that, they play the Vegas Golden Knights, San Jose Sharks and Wild.
Essentially, for the Flames to make the playoffs, they’ll have to go 4–0, or 3–1 at the worst throughout these remaining few games. That’s also assuming that the Blues and Wild lose the rest of their games, which, let’s be real, isn’t happening.
It’s time for the Flames to accept their fate. While there are fans who aren’t throwing in the towel just yet, the reality is that the numbers don’t lie, as the odds are not in their favour. It’s time for the team to pivot by inserting more youth into their lineup and developing a solid direction for the offseason.
As mentioned, the Wild and Blues currently occupy the wild card spots in the West and are both at 93 points. As far as their playoff odds go, both teams stand at above 90%, with the Blues at 93.4% and the Wild having a 96% chance to make the postseason. The Blues close out the regular season against the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday, while the Wild will finish off the season facing off against the Ducks on the same day.
As for Utah and the Vancouver Canucks, both teams have officially been eliminated from playoff contention.
