Although he won’t be a free agent until the end of the next campaign, Connor McDavid’s contractual situation has been the subject of much discussion this summer, with many agreeing that he should sign a long-term deal with the Oilers. The player himself recently even hinted that the possibility of not signing (no term) in Edmonton might be an option.
However, contract or not, McDavid has at least one more season to play with the Oilers as the club prepares for the upcoming campaign.
The team will be looking to return to the Stanley Cup Final for a third consecutive year, this time hoping to take top honours. To do so, Edmonton will need McDavid at the top of his game, as many believe that the organization has lost depth and has not solved the problem in front of the net.
But according to teammate Leon Draisaitl, who appeared on 32 Thoughts, the captain is in top form and more determined than ever.
“There’s just something about his eyes, you know, there’s a lot of fire in it right now.” In the latest 32 Thoughts, @FriedgeHNIC and @sportsnetkyle chat with Leon Draisaitl on Connor McDavid’s offseason and more! Full video

McDavid has been practicing a lot this summer, more than last year, and he should have a very big year. Still according to Draisaitl, the Ontario native is scary and has fire in his eyes. Could McDavid beat his high of 64 goals and 153 points from 2022-23? And can not having a contract yet serve as extra motivation next season?
Because it’s pretty certain that his contract situation will quickly become a distraction for the Oilers, but if McDavid has an incredible season, it could be a blessing in disguise. If the forward can beat his own mark, he’ll really break the bank (even more) in his next contract, whether in Edmonton or elsewhere.
In short, if the Oilers want to get back to the finals, they’ll need McDavid and Draisaitl to be in top form and at the top of their game. spacer title=’En rafale’] – Als. win
