Alexandre Texier is soon to be an unrestricted free agent, and while it appears as many as nine teams have reached out and expressed an interest in signing him, it seems he’s made his choice on where he’ll play next.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that Texier’s agent, Dan Milstein, plans to have calls with two teams on Sunday once Texier becomes a free agent. He adds that the Montreal Canadiens are one of those two teams. Meanwhile, Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday’s Headlines, “The word around the league right now…the favorite is absolutely the Montreal Canadiens.” Nothing is yet official, but he noted, “All eyes are on Montreal for Texier.”

Texier would join the Canadiens from the St. Louis Blues after clearing waivers to facilitate the two sides terminating his contract. He had one assist in eight games for the Blues this season and 11 points in 31 games last season. The Blues had been trying to trade Texier, but the offers weren’t there and both sides felt this was the better pathway to moving on.

He was in the final season of a deal that saw him count as a $2.1 million cap hit. Teams didn’t want to take that on, meaning he’ll likely sign for $1 million or less on a prorated deal. He’s the kind of depth guy who can help, as the Canadiens have been looking for forward help amid a rash of injuries.
