Connor McDavid becomes sixth player in history to reach milestone

Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid continued his historic season on Saturday afternoon by hitting a single season milestone that only five players before him have reached.

With his goal at the 18:16 mark of the first period against the San Jose Sharks, McDavid recorded his 150th point of the 2022-23 season, making him just the sixth player in league history to ever have 150 points in a single season.

He is the first player to do so since Mario Lemieux during the 1995-96 season.

McDavid, Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, Phil Esposito, Steve Yzerman and Bernie Nicholls are the only players to ever reach that level in a season.

What makes McDavid's total so impressive is that the previous five players all reached that mark during the highest-scoring era in league history. And while offense across the NHL has seen a surge in recent years, it is still an unheard of level of production to see a player hit the 150-point mark in today's game.

McDavid has been the most dominant offensive player in the league from pretty much the day he arrived in the league and is just now hitting his prime years. He is the runaway favorite to win the MVP award and has the Oilers in a prime position to make a serious run at the Stanley Cup this season.

He already reached the 60-goal mark earlier this season.

Just for some perspective on how incredible his numbers are, as of Saturday there were only seven other players in the league to top even the 100-point mark, while his teammate, Leon Draisaitl, is the only other player to exceed 110 points. Draisaitl is second in the league in scoring with 128 points.

McDavid is not just winning the scoring race, he is completely lapping the field. He is on track to be one of the best offensive players the league has ever seen.
