Anaheim Ducks Injury Updates

The Anaheim Ducks are dealing with a few injuries as training camp gets underway. The Ducks provided several updates today, announcing that defenseman Ian Moore will miss the next two to four weeks with a lower-body injury; forward Ryan Poehling is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury; and prospect forward Herman Träff will miss the next day or two with an illness.

No team wants injuries to hit, but some teams are better positioned to absorb them than others. Anaheim is not one of those teams, especially on the blue line. The Ducks lost John Carlson, Jacob Trouba, and Radko Gudas this summer on the free agent market, and traded Olen Zellweger to the Buffalo Sabrees. Anaheim only added veteran defenseman Nick Jensen on a two-year, $4.5MM contract.

In defense of the Ducks, they may have planned for more additions. Entering the offseason, it wasn’t exactly a mystery that the Ducks would need to target defensive additions. Unfortunately, their offseason didn’t go as planned, as Anaheim had to dish out $31.5MM to retain Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier, leaving little room for much else.

Given how those situations played out, the Ducks will enter the 2026-27 season with little blue line experience. Jackson LaCombe is a great piece, and Pavel Mintyukov has shown flashes of superb talent, but Anaheim has little depth behind them. This makes a multi-week injury to Moore even more devastating.

Had Moore been able to enjoy a full preseason, he may have begun the regular season in Anaheim’s top-four, largely based off necessity. He had a relatively successful rookie season with the Ducks last year, scoring four goals and 12 points in 67 games while averaging 13:40 of ice time per game. He finished third among returning blue liners in blocked shots.

Fortunately, the Ducks don’t have as much to worry about on the offensive side of things. Poehling and Träff should only miss a few days at most, and Anaheim has more than enough depth to fill in the gaps in the meantime.

Coming off their first postseason appearance in some time, the Ducks are certainly not in dire straights, and still have a few promisinig defensive prospects that should help the team in a few years. However, given their current lack of depth on the blue line, Anaheim may want to think about using its remaining cap space to poach an unrestricted free agent like Logan Stanley before another team does.
