Don’t look now, but the Anaheim Ducks are taking the NHL by storm. They have won seven straight games and lead the Pacific Division with 23 points.
When you examine the NHL statistics, you’ll see that Leo Carlsson is tied for second in scoring with 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in 15 games. That places him with some pretty impressive company, like Nathan MacKinnon, who leads the league with 29 points. The second overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft has been burning it up lately. He has collected five goals and five assists in his last five games. Mackinnon has five goals and seven assists over his previous five contests.
Carlsson, 20, has two power-play goals, two short-handed tallies, as well as three game-winning goals, including one in overtime. No wonder the Ducks are an early-season surprise team. He lines up with veteran Chris Kreider and Troy Terry. The trio has combined for 41 goals.

The second young talent, Cutter Gauthier, 21, has 11 goals and nine assists this season. He has Mason McTavish and rookie Beckett Sennecke as linemates. His last five games illustrate why Anaheim has been so successful thus far this season. He has five goals and five assists. He was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers on January 9, 2024, in exchange for defenseman Jamie Drysdale and a 2025 second-round draft pick.
The third player, who is a rookie, is Beckett Sennecke. At just 19 years old, he has added six goals and five assists in 15 games.
It may not be easy to call Troy Terry, 28, a veteran, but he is in his ninth season in the NHL. He has five goals and 14 helpers this season. Over his last five games, he has recorded six assists, demonstrating he is an accomplished playmaker. He is scoring at an average of 0.68 points per game.
Chris Kreider, at 34, is no spring chicken, but it seems that with all the youth playing around him, he has found a fountain of youth in his play. In 11 games, he has accumulated nine goals and three assists. He has been playing alongside Carlsson and Terry, so that line has been providing explosive offense. Did the New York Rangers lose the trade that sent Kreider to the West Coast?
Jacob Trouba, acquired from the Rangers last December, already has 10 points in 15 games, surpassing his eight points in 53 games last season. It seems that the youth on this team are inspiring the veterans. It creates an ideal blend of youth and experience that has been the key to the Ducks’ success this season.
Say what you will about Joel Quenneville and his storied past… he is one hell of a coach. Winning three Stanley Cups proves that. He has 980 career wins behind the bench and will certainly surpass 1,000 wins soon.
He knows how to squeeze every ounce of production from his players, and in Anaheim, he has talent oozing from his group. He had Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews leading the Chicago Blackhawks to three Cups. The way the Ducks are playing, he may be able to add to his Cup total…eventually.
Quenneville knows it’s a long season, and their goal was to have a good start, and they have accomplished that.
The challenge intensifies as the Ducks will face the Avalanche on Veterans’ Day. The Colorado club has 25 points through 16 games, while Anaheim has 23 points in 15 games. The showdown will not make or break the Ducks, but it may demonstrate if they are a true contender for the postseason.
It could be pegged as the MacKinnon vs. Carlsson show, the way these two stars are playing. This could be “THE” NHL game to see on November 11th. MacKinnon almost has nothing to prove, but you can bet that Carlsson wants to know if he can lead his team to victory.
Attempting to extend their seven-game winning streak, will the rising Ducks be up to the test?
MacKinnon may very well have something to say about that.
