Predators center Steven Stamkos is enjoying a resurgence this season, recently hitting the 30-goal mark and on pace to pass his point total from last year, holding 47 as of Wednesday. As the March 6th trade deadline looms closer, a Stamkos trade is perhaps still on the table despite the veteran stating that he won’t waive his no-movement clause, as Nashville has established themselves as sellers.
Last week, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun identified the trio of “Tampa, Dallas, Minnesota” as the leading candidates to land Stamkos. Stamkos commands an AAV of $8M, meaning GMs of the three contenders would likely need Nashville to retain part of his salary, or otherwise exchange player contracts. Below are some ideas of what a fit would look like for each of the three teams.
Stamkos returns to the place where he built his legacy as a future hall of famer, familiar with the system and culture of the organization. His experience and current second-half streak in a comfortable system would be huge towards the Atlantic Division-leading Lightning, especially in a potential clash with the heavyweight Carolina Hurricanes in the playoffs.
As a franchise frequently embracing an “all-in” mentality, Tampa Bay is limited in terms of draft capital. Their prospect pool is also relatively thin, ranked 29th in the NHL by The Hockey Writers in a recent evaluation, meaning they would need to dig deep to acquire Stamkos. There are also two years left on his 4-year, 32M contract, so the Lightning need to decide whether bringing back the franchise icon for the long run is in their best interest.
The surging Minnesota Wild have been reported to be in the running for a top-six forward, recently linked to the Rangers’ Vincent Trocheck. Stamkos, though, could perhaps be the difference for the Wild, who find themselves in a packed Central Division.
The Wild boast a healthy prospect system, with a quality record of developing young talent. Their pool of young talent did thin out slightly after the Quinn Hughes trade, but the team still holds valuable trade chips to tempt the retooling Predators with. The aggressive Wild could be poised to strike again in their quest for a Stanley Cup.
The Stars have been a team struggling to get over the hump in the playoffs, coming into the 2025-26 season having three straight conference finals. Stamkos could be seen as a significant difference maker, especially on an already efficient power-play line. Come time to clash with the Wild or Avalanche in the playoffs, Stamkos’ veteran presence could be a key to success.
Stamkos’ contract is an issue for the Stars, but still have a decent pool of picks they could move without a rebuild in sight. With a solid young core already producing, Dallas could be incentivized to part ways with a share of their prospect pool if they think it translates to a Stanley Cup appearance.
Again, Stamkos has seemingly refuted any rumors involving an exit out of Nashville. With Cole Smith and Michael McCarron already moved from Nashville, and his teammate Ryan O’Reilly seemingly on the move, Stamkos may also decide to jump ship. The chaos of the NHL trade deadline could throw him back in the headlines as things heat up.
