Artemi Panarin is a Korkino, Russia-born left-winger who was born on October 30, 1991. The left-winger began his hockey career with SDYUSHOR Vityaz Podolsk of MosJHL during the 2007-08 season. In 22 games, he scored seven goals and added 15 assists. The point-per-game average at 16-years-old is impressive. Panarin then moved on to Vityaz Chekhov of the KHL, where he spent nearly a decade. Panarin needed to prove that he could perform for one of the most storied clubs in the KHL.
Panarin’s move to SKA St. Petersburg, also of the KHL, came after a decade with Vityaz Chekhov. The KHL is the best hockey league in Russia, and Panarin, putting up 20 goals and 20 assists in his first full season during the 2013-14 KHL season with SKA St. Petersburg, showed that he can score at any level. After three seasons with SKA St. Petersburg, Panarin was again looking to make a move, this time to the next best hockey league in the world, the NHL.
Artemi Panarin was not drafted out of Russia, as he is a slightly small winger at 5’11” and 176 lbs, and was signed as a free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks. Panarin was not drafted because he was a late bloomer going into his draft. Panarin won the Calder Trophy for the Blackhawks after the 2015-16 season, where he led all rookies in scoring with 30 goals and added 47 assists in 80 games played. In his second season with the Blackhawks, Panarin scored 31 goals and added 43 assists in 82 games played.
After being acquired by the New York Rangers from the Columbus Blue Jackets in July of 2019. Artemi Panarin made his way to Broadway and scored 32 goals and added 63 assists in 69 games. In November of 2024, Panarin became the only undrafted player to crack the 800-point mark in his career. At the time of writing this, Panarin scored 927 goals in 804 games played. This ranks in the top 25 for most goals scored by an undrafted player.

Congratulations to the @nyrangers forward, who also becomes the 33rd undrafted player to ever reach the mark! pic.twitter.com/uMt2M3gzvK
Panarin was acquired by the Rangers to make the Stanley Cup finals. This is something that Panarin has not been able to do in his 11-year career. That is not to say that Panarin is not one of the most popular players in the NHL in this time. Panarin has been named to the NHL All-Star team twice during his career. Going into the Olympic break, the Kings were three points out of a playoff spot in the Pacific division with 60 points.
Before the Olympic Games roster freeze, Artemi Panarin was traded from the New York Rangers to the Los Angeles Kings. Liam Greentree and a conditional third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft went the other way in the trade. This was always going to be the destination for Panarin as he made it clear that he wanted to be traded to the Kings. Perhaps this is the reason that the return for Panarin has been considered light.
The leg injury suffered by forward Kevin Fiala at the Olympic Games may put more pressure on Panarin to get the Kings into the Stanley Cup playoffs. Panarin is not at the Olympics due to Russia’s continued banishment from the games. In 52 games played for the Rangers this season, Panarin scored 19 goals and added 38 assists. This is one fewer than the leading scorer on the Kings, left-winger Adrian Kempe. One thing is certain, and that is that Panarin has performed well at every level of hockey.
