Ask Dubey: Who has the most deceptive shot in the NHL, a rant about referees, and more

Welcome to another edition of Ask Dubey!

After taking a few questions about the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers in this year’s Stanley Cup Final, we talked about injuries in the playoffs, who has the most deceptive shot, and a rant about the refs.

Q1: Should Game 2’s Double OT Goal Have Been Called Off for Goalie Interference?

It looked like Marchand lifted Skinner’s stick, but that’s not enough to overturn a goal. Unless the goalie is shoved into the net or clearly impeded after a shot, it won’t be called.

It was just an unfortunate bounce. Draisaitl made a great defensive play, almost too good. He tied up Marchand’s stick, which actually led to the puck getting redirected early and sneaking through Skinner’s legs.

Last night’s goalie interference call on Arvidsson was questionable too. Bobrovsky sold it hard, one of the most exaggerated flops I’ve ever seen. Yes, he was bumped. But he nearly did a backflip. If you’re going to call that, offset it.

Q2: How Many Guys Are Playing Hurt? Is It Helping or Hurting?

Tons of players are hurt right now. These guys are warriors. You don’t make it this far without carrying some injuries.

They hide it, tape it up, and go out and play. Unless a guy is clearly hurting the team or risking major damage, he stays in the lineup. And so far, both teams are still playing at an elite level.

When the playoffs are over, we’ll hear all the injury stories. And it’ll be even more impressive thinking back on the quality of play we’re seeing.

Q3: Most Deceptive Shot You Faced?

I’ll give you a few.

Alex Ovechkin. His slingshot release combined with that massive curve? Brutal to read. I didn’t play him much, but he lit me up.

Jason Pominville in Minnesota. Most deceptive shot I’ve ever seen. His release never changed, no matter where he was shooting. I couldn’t stop him in practice for weeks.

Jordan Eberle. Not the hardest shot, but smart and deceptive. Great release.

And Sheldon Souray? That guy shot 107 mph and used to yell “Sorry, Doobs” before blasting one. Terrifying.

Refereeing Rant

Look, I don’t like ripping on refs. I know it’s tough. But the first-period officiating last game was brutal. Eight penalties? No flow. No rhythm.

They seem to be trying to set the tone early by calling a bunch and then backing off. But it’s not working. The Evander Kane call? Terrible. Arvidsson? A dive from Bob. There are real penalties like high-sticks and too many men. But the rest? Over-officiating.

Let the teams play 5-on-5 unless it’s an injury risk, high stick, or clear scoring chance. The ticky-tack calls are killing the product. It’s not about favouring one side, just about letting the game breathe. And at 5-on-5, I truly think the Oilers are better.
