The Calgary Flames had some added offensive flare Sunday evening in a 5-1 slump busting victory over the New York Rangers.

It’s a Team Game – By no means was it a perfect game, but it was exactly the combination the Flames needed. Dustin Wolf was at the top of his game and the shooting percentage slump ended in a big way for Calgary. During the eight game losing streak goals like the one Kevin Bahl scored – a distant wrister from the blue line – just weren’t going in. Calgary had been deprived of those goals seeing pretty consistent goaltending throughout that stretch. There was some more flair in the attack today, which was the primary difference. Right from the first shift where Joel Hanley made a darn nice move to get the puck off the wall and into space before Nazem Kadri and Jonathan Huberdeau did the rest. That goal doesn’t happen without Hanley, just like the third goal doesn’t happen without Connor Zary’s little inside-outside move entering the attacking zone that froze the defender and allowed him space to drive low. That creativity had been missing from the Flames game as a whole for quite some time. It can’t vanish because that’s how they’ll continue to score goals. Get Matt Coronato back in this lineup with this creative shift and I think he’ll really start to produce regularly.
Corsi King – Connor Zary (63.89 CF%) had his best game of the season. The line shuffling he’s been subjected to could possibly be affecting the output, but we had also not seen the dangles he employed from early last season this season – until this game that is. He was noticeable, great with the puck, and created a goal because of it. That effort is what Calgary needs some of their young guys to start showcasing on a more consistent basis. The talent is there, but it’s not being showcased most nights. Whatever change was made – if there even was one – it caused something to click for a lot of guys in this one. Yegor Sharangovich (60.96 per cent) got his first of the season off that Zary play. Here’s hoping that sparks a little more shoot into his game.
Under Pressure –
Taken By Chance – A player I thought played very well and was making solid plays in the offensive zone was Zayne Parekh (63.99 SCF% // 33.21 HDCF%). He’s a natural with the puck on the attacking blueline – and has made the first power play way more efficient. He directs the puck to areas where it’s easy for his teammates to pick up with control and isn’t afraid to whip it at the net if he thinks there’s a shooting lane. He was more physical tonight than he has been all season – have to remember he’s just 19, there’s so much room to grow and no need to rush. He clearly belongs here it’s just a matter of getting more comfortable.
xG Breakdown –
xGF% – Blake Coleman (50.43 per cent) being the Flames leading goal scorer after 10 games is certainly a bit of a shock, but not entirely unsurprising. The shorthanded goal he and Mikael Backlund (33.55 per cent) orchestrated was simply remarkable. I could rewatch that clip all day long. Coleman has been about as reliable a player as anyone that’s ever worn the Flaming C. You never question his work ethic, you can use him in any situation, and he produces more than enough to come through with a big goal regularly. The bad start leaves a lot of future in limbo, but right now appreciating the effort Coleman gives for the people that pay for tickets is a positive to highlight.

In The Crease – Dustin Wolf is a wizard? He’s actually Spiderman? Maybe he’s got like, elastic superpowers or something? He’s sensational to watch every single game. His paddle stop will be on the top 50 highlights for the next month, if not longer. He makes a highlight reel stop seemingly every single game. I’m really glad this squad finally got Wolf another win, he’s clearly their MVP and deserves to have good moments. This season may be a showcase of how far he can carry a roster that doesn’t score much, but we’ll have to wait and see.
