Blackhawks Franchise Icon Patrick Kane Signs with Detroit Red Wings
Danny Wild-USA TODAY Sports

After months of speculation regarding where Patrick Kane will play hockey in 2023-24, the answer has finally been revealed. On Tuesday, a number of reporters broke the silence  reporting that Kane is signing with the Detroit Red Wings. For Chicago Blackhawks fans, it is a metaphorically sickening moment.

As noted above by TSN Insider Chris Johnston, Kane was recovering from offseason hip surgery, hence his delayed signing. The list of finalists for Kane's services reportedly included the Red Wings, New York Rangers, and his hometown Buffalo Sabres. Ultimately, Kane chose to join old friend and another former Blackhawk, Alex DeBrincat, in Detroit.

Kane recorded 45 points in 54 games with the Blackhawks in 2022-23 before he was traded to the Rangers. In 19 games with the Rangers, Kane added another 12 points. Statistically, it was one of Kane's worst offensive seasons, but a lot of that can be tied to his hip injury that forced him to play at half speed.

Ironically, the Blackhawks pay a visit to the Red Wings on Thursday, November 30. In addition, the Blackhawks will host the Wings on February 25 for Chris Chelios' jersey retirement ceremony. Now, Patrick Kane will be in the building, but wearing the away sweater instead of the Indianhead.

On our recent Four Feathers Pod, we discussed why the Blackhawks could still use Kane despite the rebuild. However, Connor Bedard will have to figure it out himself as Kane goes to join the Red Wings, who sit third place in the Atlantic Division.

According to sources, Kane's one-year deal is worth $2.75 million. The price is a modest value for a presumably healthy Patrick Kane.
