Blue Jackets Will Only Get Better as Season Progresses
Sean Monahan, Columbus Blue Jackets (Amy Irvin / The Hockey Writers)

The Columbus Blue Jackets’ push for the playoffs this season has undoubtedly been one of the NHL’s feel-good stories so far. While the organization has suffered a considerable number of injuries, they’ve always been able to find another player to step up and make an impact. Ultimately though, they’ll get some key players back and the team will become even more dangerous.

Players have already started returning from injury in Columbus, as Justin Danforth was activated off of the injured reserve on Monday (Jan. 20). The forward had missed the last 18 games, and although he’s not a high-end game-changer, he’s carved out a role for himself as a key part of the Blue Jackets’ bottom-six. He’s the first of many, as there are quite a few players who should be returning to action as the team continues to battle for a wild card spot.

Top-Six Reinforcements

Out of the players currently on the shelf, Sean Monahan has missed the least amount of time. He suffered an upper-body injury earlier this month and is expected to return in the relatively near future. General manager Don Waddell told our Mark Scheig, that Monahan’s injury is “not day-to-day but it isn’t long-term either.”

Yegor Chinakhov on the other hand has been out for quite a while. He suffered an injury against the Montreal Canadiens on Nov. 27, and was placed on the injured reserve a couple of weeks later. Before the injury, the 23-year-old was off to the best start of his career and was pacing to blow his previous career-high numbers out of the water. In 21 games, he had seven goals and assists for a total of 14 points. At that rate, he would’ve undoubtedly surpassed his previous career high of 29 points in 53 games.

He’s expected to return within the “next few weeks,” and he’ll certainly bring some high-end skill back into the top-six forward group.

The Blue Jackets put a lot of faith in the 2020 first-round pick, signing him to a two-year contract extension over the summer and if he’s able to pick up where he left off, he’ll certainly be a difference-maker for the remainder of the season.

Veteran Leadership

The Blue Jackets have been without two big parts of their leadership group for the majority of the season as well. Captain Boone Jenner has yet to take the ice in the 2024-25 season, but is ahead of schedule and could return before the Stadium Series game this March, and possibly even sooner.

Jenner isn’t only a key locker room figure for the Blue Jackets, he’s a workhorse on the ice who contributes to every aspect of the game. In theory, as a hard-nosed goal-scoring threat he seems like a perfect player for a coach like Dean Evason, which will be an interesting storyline to watch when he does finally take the ice.

Last but not least, alternate captain Erik Gudbranson has been out since very early in the season, playing only three games so far. He underwent shoulder surgery at the end of October, but is on pace to return before the end of the season and just in time to help contribute at a key point of the season.

The Blue Jackets have been very good this season, and have exceeded expectations in every way. As key players continue to return from injury though, they’re only going to get better and better which could make them a dangerous dark-horse heading into the postseason.

Not only will they be getting players who can contribute both offensively and defensively back on the ice, but they’ll be getting veteran leadership as well. Players like Jenner and Gudbranson have embodied what it means to be a Blue Jacket, putting the team first in every aspect. Monahan has done the same, even though it’s his first season in Columbus.

Evason having all of these weapons at his disposal will allow him to create more internal competition and as a result, bring more flexibility. Adam Fantilli is currently showing he can be a true first-line center, but Monahan has done the same. If they’re both playing at their best, it’s a good problem to have as you try to decide who goes on the first line, and who goes on the second. The same debate will happen with Jenner and Cole Sillinger for the third-line center role. Does Sillinger drop to the fourth line, or does Jenner slide back to the wing like he did early in his career? Having a multitude of options in multiple different areas will only push the team forward.

Important trade stalls as Maple Leafs dangle bottom-six forward

Important trade stalls as Maple Leafs dangle bottom-six forward

The Toronto Maple Leafs are still looking for a solution to their bottom-six surplus, and veteran forward Calle Jarnkrok remains at the center of trade discussions. However, according to The Fourth Period, trade talks surrounding the 33-year-old winger have failed to gain momentum. They write: “He has a $2.1M cap hit and owns a 10-team no-trade list. The market hasn’t been vibrant, to this point, but the Leafs will continue to dangle him.” Why can’t the Maple Leafs find a taker for Jarnkrok? Jarnkrok has quietly been on the trade block for much of the offseason, but general manager Brad Treliving has yet to find a taker. After adding several depth forwards this summer, the Leafs now face a crowded bottom six — and Jarnkrok’s age, injury history and $2.1M cap hit through 2025–26 aren’t helping his value. Since joining Toronto, Jarnkrok has appeared in only 71 games over two seasons, scoring a modest 28 points. While his defensive versatility and penalty-killing ability are assets, his declining offensive production and durability concerns have made teams wary. With training camp approaching, the Maple Leafs may be forced to keep Jarnkrok on the roster — or retain salary in a deal — if they want to create space and flexibility. Dropping his cap hit down to just over $1M would open up the market a little. Until then, the Swedish forward remains a trade candidate in limbo. This isn’t great news as moving Jarnkrok from the roster is an important item on the team’s to-do list. Treliving would like more cap space, and with Jarnkrok and David Kampf both still on the roster, it hampers the GM’s ability to do other things.

Browns make curious decision with rookie QB Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns are giving Shedeur Sanders special treatment in training camp, but it's not the type of favoritism the fifth-round pick would necessarily want. Per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN, Sanders is the only Browns quarterback who has not been taking reps with the first-team offense during OTAs or the first two practices of training camp. Former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett, veteran Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel have all split reps with the first team. Despite being asked to throw passes to members of the equipment staff amid a shortage of professional pass-catchers for a four-quarterback roster, Sanders said he's thankful for the opportunity to show the Browns coaching staff his talents. "I feel like that it's not in my control, so I'm not going to think about that or even have that in my thought process of why it is," Sanders said to a question as to why he's not getting first-team reps. "There's a lot of people who want to have the opportunity to be at this level, and I'm here and I'm thankful to have the opportunity. So, whenever that is, that is." Sanders, 23, believes that he can contribute more to the Browns than what the coaching staff is asking of him. "It doesn't make me feel down or left out because I know who I am as a person," Sanders said. "I know who I am as an individual and I know what I could bring to this team. So, I can never feel less than any circumstance." The Browns selected Sanders with the No. 144 pick in April's draft. As a player whom many draft analysts thought was a first-round talent, Cleveland took what could be the steal of the draft in the fifth round. It's curious why the Browns aren't giving Sanders a shot with the first team early in training camp before the quarterback race becomes more serious. Cleveland should see what Sanders has to offer this summer. Flacco, 40, isn't a long-term solution at the position. Pickett failed in Pittsburgh. The Browns need to gauge what rookies Gabriel and Sanders can do with the first team. Having Sanders throw balls to the equipment staff is a waste of everyone's time. But then again, Cleveland has wasted plenty of quarterbacks.

Cowboys make questionable move amid Micah Parsons stalemate

The Dallas Cowboys extended one of their stars Sunday, just not the one fans wanted them to pay. At Cowboys training camp Saturday, Dallas fans serenaded owner Jerry Jones with "Pay Micah [Parsons]" chants. The EDGE, of course, is set to play on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract this season. Jones must not have been listening. He gave tight end Jake Ferguson a new contract instead. Dallas and the 26-year-old pass-catcher agreed to a four-year, $52M contract extension, via NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. This move seems head-scratching. Parsons has won the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year and earned two first-team All-Pro nods since the Cowboys took him with pick No. 12 in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old EDGE also finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Ferguson, meanwhile, is solid but not elite. In three seasons with the Cowboys, the 2022 fourth-round pick has made one Pro Bowl and has never finished with more than 761 receiving yards in a season. An extension for Parsons will devour future cap space. The Cowboys may be worried about that after giving quarterback Dak Prescott (four years, $240M) and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (four years, $136M) long-term deals in 2024. Pittsburgh Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt signed a lucrative three-year, $123M extension on July 17, making him the league's highest-paid non-QB. Parsons could command a similar contract. If cap space is Dallas' primary concern, however, why would it extend Ferguson? He's now set to be the NFL's seventh-highest-paid TE. The Cowboys waited to extend Lamb and Prescott just before the start of the 2024 season. They may be doing the same with Parsons. The star defender has said, "Ownership is always gonna make [contract negotiations] drag out." Regardless, the Cowboys should've paid Parsons before Ferguson. That's a much bigger priority for the team.

Steelers' Troy Fautanu Admits To Internal Beef That Has Been Obvious Throughout Training Camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been easing their way into training camp ahead of the 2025 season. The players have just been wearing helmets and shorts, and the pads will come on soon. Pittsburgh's training camp is always known as being one of the most intense in the league, and that is because Head Coach Mike Tomlin has his team go full contact, which is something other coaches around the NFL try to avoid. The pads will come on on Tuesday, and fans should expect to see some skirmishes as emotions rise throughout the rest of camp. Practices in just helmets and shorts are difficult for the big guys in the trenches. It is essentially impossible to simulate blocking without pads on, so the defenders and offensive linemen are itching for when the team gets to go full contact. Second-year offensive lineman Troy Fautanu spoke to the media on Sunday, and he shared how things have been going at practice, while also noting that the two sides of the ball have been going at it. "You know, there's a lot of banter going on between the offense and the defense right now." Fautanu said. "As you guys could tell yesterday, things got a little rowdy. I mean, that's something that's normal. I'm super excited just to finally be able to play real football, because as an offensive lineman it's the worst thing to play football in shorts and t-shirts." Fautanu is probably itching to get back to full contact more than others after missing nearly all of his rookie season in 2024. He played in one game in Week 2 before suffering a knee injury that kept him out for the rest of the year. Tuesday will be the first time he gets to put the pads on and get truly physical in nearly a year. The way he described things, it sounds like there will probably be some confrontations as the offense and defense have already been going at it. Training camp is going to be a true test for Fautanu. He is the team's starting right tackle going into the season, and the organization is relying on the offensive line to take a step forward. He needs to try to live up to his first-round label, and he is going to have to do so while blocking TJ Watt in every practice. Watt is going to be moving around the defensive formation more often than usual, but most of his snaps will come when he is lined up over the right tackle. Fautanu is going to be tested on every snap, and if he can handle Watt, he can handle anyone in the league. Having to go up against Watt every day in practice is good for Fautanu in the long run. Practicing against the best is only going to make him better, and he won't have to block anyone during the 2025 regular season that is as good of a pass rusher as Watt. Steelers' Fautanu Could Solidify 2024 Draft For Pittsburgh It is already looking like the Steelers made a ton of right decisions during the 2024 NFL Draft. Zach Frazier had a spectacular rookie season in 2024, and he is looking like he could be one of the best centers in the league. Mason McCormick was a pleasant surprise at right tackle when he was thrust into the starting lineup, and it seems he has gotten considerably better over the course of the 2025 offseason. If Fautanu can prove he is the starting right tackle of the future for the Steelers, then the organization would have nailed three cornerstones of the franchise in just one draft. All contenders have solid offensive lines, and it looks like the Steelers might have one that could be great in the near future.
