The Boston Bruins announced Thursday the return of a retired legend to the organization.

Franchise icon Zdeno Chara is rejoining the Bruins in a front-office capacity, naming the Hall of Fame defenseman for the role of "Hockey Operations Advisor and Mentor."

Chara, 48, will work closely with players and staff in what the team described as “key areas.” His responsibilities include building relationships between players and coaches, attending practices and home games, and providing off-ice development support for defensemen.

The towering defenseman will also serve as a resource for the development staff and make periodic visits to Providence to connect with prospects.

“The Bruins organization is excited and proud to welcome back Zdeno,” Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said. “In his role as an advisor and mentor, Zdeno will share with our players and coaches his experience as a dedicated athlete, a respected leader and one of the NHL’s all-time greats.”

Chara played 14 seasons with Boston after signing as a free agent in 2006, serving as captain through the club’s most successful modern era.

A 6-foot-9 blueliner, Chara guided the Bruins to three Stanley Cup Final appearances and a championship in 2011.

New Bruins head coach Marco Sturm, who played alongside Chara in Boston from 2006 through 2010, said the move brings valuable leadership back into the locker room.

“Having played alongside Zdeno, I know firsthand the leadership, work ethic and professionalism he brings every day,” Sturm said. “We’re thrilled to have him back with the Bruins in this role, where his knowledge of the game will be a great resource for our players and staff.”

Chara's 1,680 career games remain the most by a defenseman in league history, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame earlier this year.
