The Boston Bruins came into the 2025-26 season with lower expectations than normal, given the personnel changes that have occurred over the last few months for the team. That tune has changed as the campaign has begun, with Boston winning intense games to keep pace in the Atlantic Division. Tuesday night’s win over the Toronto Maple Leafs proved they have what it takes to win, which could be dangerous for other teams down the line.
Boston kept their winning streak alive Tuesday against the Maple Leafs, meaning the team hasn’t lost a game in over two weeks. A large part of that is how well they’re playing against teams poised to compete for playoff spots down the road, a challenge they have met with open arms. The Bruins have tallied wins over the Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Maple Leafs over that stretch, all three of which found themselves in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season.
Boston set reasonable expectations before the start of the 2025-26 season, and so far, those expectations have been exceeded. Whether it can keep it up is yet to be seen, but the Bruins’ upcoming schedule features teams that are off to their own fast starts in the Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Hurricanes, and Anaheim Ducks. The upcoming games will give them a chance to test themselves against solid competition. Provided they can get through that, people might start to call them legitimate Atlantic Division contenders.
Pastrnak stole the show Tuesday by scoring twice, including his 400th career goal. The longtime Bruin became just the sixth player in franchise history to reach the mark, joining the likes of former teammates Brad Marchand (422) and Patrice Bergeron (427). In addition, Pastrnak’s 400th regular season goal marked the third time a player born in Czechia reached the mark (also Jaromir Jagr (766) and Patrik Elias (408). Given that he is going to represent the nation at the Olympics in 2026, it’s a pretty cool milestone to see him reach.
Although Swayman played a limited time for the United States during the Four Nations Face-Off, he might just find himself with a bigger role heading into Olympic selection. The goaltender has been in the net for four of the wins during the team’s seven-game stretch, and his performance on Tuesday night showcased just how important he is to their success. He stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced en route to a .909 save percentage and became the eighth goalie this year with eight or more wins.
Boston’s performance this season will rest largely on his shoulders, but given his recent performances against high-scoring teams, it might just work out in their favor. Swayman got quite a long time left in a Bruins uniform, too, considering he’s in just the second year of an eight-year deal. Maintaining his rate might make it the steal of the decade for Boston.
The Bruins were slated to be a middle-of-the-road or worse team heading into the season, and even I’m surprised by their early success. The team has really come together as a unit and is firing on all cylinders lately, leading to some hard-fought wins against some great teams.
A huge part of that stems from their defense in addition to their offense, because while Pastrnak has been the story so far this season, his supporting cast has all been pulling their weight. Most notable are defenseman Charlie McAvoy and center Morgan Geekie, who lead the team in assists and goals, respectively.
If the Bruins can keep producing at this rate, there’s no reason they won’t be able to compete with the likes of Montreal and Ottawa for the Atlantic Division crown. I’m excited to see where this recent stretch of winning takes them. If it plays out like they hope it will, Boston might be the biggest story of the 2025-26 campaign at the end of it all.
