The Colorado Avalanche have secured the future of forward Brock Nelson with their club, re-signing him to a 3-year contract before he could enter free agency this summer.

The Colorado Avalanche were among the NHL clubs that were active at the Trade Deadline, acquiring both Brock Nelson from the New York Islanders as well as Charlie Coyle from the Boston Bruins.

And while they experienced a disappointing loss in the playoffs at the hands of the Dallas Stars, Avalanche management is deciding to keep Nelson around.

They announced just minutes ago that Nelson was re-signed to a 3-year contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $7.5 million.

Shortly after the deal was made official, Nelson released the following statement:

My family and I are excited to be staying in Colorado. Having spent my entire career with one organization, we weren't totally sure what to expect when we arrived in Denver. But getting the opportunity to play for the Avalanche, to compete with a great group of teammates in that locker room, and in front of the tremendous fans at Ball Arena, we knew this was where we wanted to stay.

In return for Nelson, the Avalanche sent the Islanders quite the haul including defenseman Oliver Kylington, forward Calum Ritchie, a 1st round draft pick in 2026 or 2027, and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2028.

Before the trade to the Avalanche, Nelson had 43 points (23G, 20A) in 61 games. After he arrived in Colorado, he had 13 points (6G, 7A) in 19 games, and followed that up with 4 assists in the 7-game Round 1 loss to the Stars.

Originally taken with the 30th pick by the Islanders in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Nelson has 587 points (301G, 286A) in 920 career games.
