Just hours before their third preseason game, the Calgary Flames announced that they have sent Axel Hurtig and Jacob Battaglia back to their respective junior teams. Battaglia is back with the Kingston Frontenacs, while Hurtig stays in Calgary, but with the Calgary Hitmen.

What’s next for these players

While both are back in the CHL, this is not the last you will hear from them. Hurtig was outstanding in his first game with the Flames this preseason, playing as a reliable defenceman with a big body. He does need to fill out some more this season, but once he does, the 6’4″ blueliner should be a force at the next level.

Battaglia should tear up the OHL this season. Following a 90-point season last year in which he finished 11th in scoring in the league, the second-rounder should finish in the top 10 this year if he remains healthy. He has signed his ELC and will report to the Calgary Wranglers next season. Battaglia finished ninth in our 2025 Calgary Flames Prospect Rankings.

Training camp now down to X players

After sending Mace’o Phillips down to the USHL, the Flames are slowly starting to find their lineup for the start of the season. They are icing a nice mixed lineup, with Jonathan Huberdeau and Yegor Sharangovich drawing in for their first games of the season alongside hopefuls Matvei Gridin and William Stromgren.

Expect a big round of cuts before the end of the week, with them starting to send more guys down to the AHL with the Wrangers. With just a couple of weeks till the season opener, there’s a lot of buzz around this team. Time to get excited!
