Canadian Daily Rumours: Jets, Oilers & Maple Leafs Blame Game

In today’s (May 20) Canadian Daily Rumours roundup, I’m looking at three rumours circulating around Canadian clubs. Could the Jets flip Hellebuyck for a young blue‑liner? Is the Oilers’ coaching search circling established, grindy winners (with Cassidy possibly blocked)? And with the Maple Leafs, Brad Treliving’s “we didn’t have the buy‑in” line hints that the team’s real problem was player buy-in and locker‑room culture.

Jets Rumour: Hellebuyck for Owen Power?

Jeff Marek tossed out a wild one. Buffalo grabs Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg gets Owen Power plus pieces — and yeah, that’ll make some Jets fans grimace. Marek and others are just poking at a real question. Is it time for the Jets to rip the Band‑Aid off and move their long‑time starter before things stagnate? Hellebuyck’s still a top goalie, but with an aging core and big contracts looming, the Jets might face a brutal math problem where flipping him for a young impact defenseman (and assets) could be the roster reset they need.

Tyler Yaremchuk and ex‑goalie Carter Hutton echoed the same vibes: there’s been smoke about Hellebuyck wanting a fresh start, and if there’s smoke, somebody’s smoking. The wrinkle is obvious. Can you trade away your best goalie and still compete in a brutal Central Division? It comes down to what you get back. If Winnipeg nets a bona fide top‑pairing D and future pieces, maybe it’s worth it; if it’s just picks and depth, you’ve lost your X‑factor and might be stuck rebuilding anyway.

Oilers Rumours: Edmonton Eyes Berube, Cassidy, Torts for Shortlist

Edmonton’s reportedly set to interview Craig Berube, Bruce Cassidy, and John Tortorella. Basically, these are three old‑school, grind‑first bosses with rings or deep playoff runs on their résumés. Berube’s stock took a hit after a rough year in Toronto. But some think his style might actually mesh better with Edmonton’s roster than with the Leafs’ speed game. The common thread: the Oilers want someone who knows how to win when it matters.

Complication: Vegas has put a wall up around Cassidy, allegedly blocking interviews and hinting they may solidify Torts in the interim gig after he’s driven them to the West Final. That move could shut down one of Edmonton’s top targets, so the coaching search is still very much in flux — the Oilers clearly want Cup experience, but who they actually land could come down to politics and who other teams let them talk to.

Maple Leafs Rumour: Treliving’s Throwaway Line Calls Out Players

In an interview with Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star, Brad Treliving said:

“We didn’t have the buy-in. You can debate how we played. I talked a little bit about it in November, but even the games we won, we weren’t winning. Whether it was shot-share, controlling play, or driving play.”

The line “we didn’t have the buy‑in” points to effort, culture, and leadership gaps that X‑and‑O fixes won’t solve. Between the lines, he’s hinting that players weren’t fully locked into the coaches’ system, that wins often masked poor underlying play (shot-share, puck control, drive), and that internal accountability wasn’t there. In short, it wasn’t just a bad roster or coaching scheme. The group’s willingness to stick to a plan was broken.

Taken as a rumour, Treliving believes the next hire (GM or coach) has to change the room’s mindset, not just the strategy. Will the new leadership group get players who demand structure and hold each other accountable, or a coach known for drilling details and standards? If true, the Maple Leafs’ reset won’t change much from how the team was coached under Craig Berube.
