Canadiens NHL Trade Target: Owen Tippett

After not landing a big fish on the NHL trade market in the off-season, the Montreal Canadiens continue to search for a top six forward that is in his prime to place alongside the current core group. One potential target that could be a good fit is Philadelphia Flyers forward Owen Tippett.

The Flyers got off to a nightmare start to their 2026-27 season, losing eight straight games, and as a result, they could be looking to sell some pieces. This is where Owen Tippett comes into the equation as a potential trade target for the Montreal Canadiens. The 27-year-old’s mix of skill and grit would be a good fit on a Canadiens team that could use more forwards that bring grit to the table alongside scoring ability.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, Tippett would bring good size and strength to the Canadiens’ wing if they were to acquire him. While he would be a great fit on the Canadiens, he will be a player that could cost them a big package in order to pry him away from the Flyers.

Tippett is currently in the third year of a very team-friendly eight-year $49.8 million contract ($6.2 million AAV). Considering how good of a contract that he currently is on, while regularly scoring around 25 goals and 50 points with the Flyers, he likely won’t come cheap on the NHL trade market.

Despite his good second-line numbers over the past four years with the Flyers, Tippett, like many players on his team, has struggled to produce, scoring just a goal and an assist through his first nine games of the 2026-27 campaign. If he does not start getting going offensively soon, his NHL trade value will start to drop a bit, but he will still likely cost the Canadiens at least a first-round pick given the reputation that he has garnered as a good second-line player. However, if he starts producing at his normal pace while the Flyers continue to struggle, the Canadiens will need to add a good young player that can go back the other way, such as Owen Beck, Oliver Kapanen, or Adam Engstrom.

What makes Tippett such an intriguing option on the trade market is that he has a very strong wrist shot that could pair well with a potentially elite playmaker like Ivan Demidov. Tippett has yet to play with a playmaker to the level of Demidov throughout his career, which could make him reach the 30-goal and 60-point marks for the first time in his NHL career. Meanwhile, Tippett can be the goal scorer that Demidov needs to go to the next level as a point-per-game player.

Tippett would also give the Montreal Canadiens another forward who can be physical and throw his body around. He has recorded 100+ hits in all four years that he’s played with the Flyers and is coming off a career-high 166 hits during the 2025-26 season. Even though the scoring hasn’t been there much from Tippett in the early stages of the year, he has upped his hitting game to 2.56 hits a night during the first nine games of the campaign.

The mix of goal scoring and physical play that Tippett brings is the exact type of player the Canadiens need to add in order to have a better chance of winning a Stanley Cup in the near future. With that being said, if the Flyers do decide to sell, the Montreal Canadiens should be all over Owen Tippett.
