The Canadiens were able to fill their need in the crease rather quickly following the exit of Cayden Primeau, as they have locked up a goalie to a two-year deal.
Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced on Sunday that the team has agreed to terms on a two-year, one-way contract with the team's goaltender, Jakub Dobes. This new deal will pay him an average of $965,000 per season.
The news of this signing was also reported by one of the games best NHL insiders, Elliotte Friedman.
In 2024-25, Dobes appeared in 16 games with the Canadiens, posting a 7-4-3 record while registering a very solid 2.74 GAA and a .909 SV%.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound netminder ranked fourth in wins among all NHL rookie goaltenders and was one of five first-year goaltenders to earn a shutout, too.
Dobes, who started the 2024-25 season with the Laval Rocket of the AHL, recorded a shutout in his first career NHL game against the Florida Panthers on December 28, 2024, which is no doubt a memory he will never forget.
The Ostrava, CZE native also played in three postseason contests and earned his first career playoff win on April 25 against the Washington Capitals, truly impressive accomplishments for a rookie.
Dobes was selected in the fifth round (136th overall) by the Canadiens at the 2020 NHL Draft. This two-year deal has now ensures the team's crease remains steady following the exit of Cayden Primeau.
