Canucks' Top Pending Free Agent a 'Longshot' to Re-Sign with Vancouver

The Vancouver Canucks appear headed for a split with veteran forward Brock Boeser, according to NHL insider David Pagnotta.

Boeser is expected to test the open market after completing his contract and entering unrestricted free agency on July 1.

Multiple signs already hinted at his departure from the only franchise he's ever played for, with the latest reports pointing toward an imminent exit from Vancouver.

Pagnotta labeled Boeser a “longshot” to return next season, citing a "team source" familiar with the situation feeding him that insider information.

"Boeser, 28, is a ‘longshot’ to re-sign with the Canucks, one team source confirmed to me this week," Pagnotta wrote.

"He is prepared to move on to the next chapter of his career and will attract significant interest this summer, especially given the limited market," Pagnotta added.

Boeser’s future has been uncertain since the trade deadline, when the Canucks explored deals but ultimately held on to him.

Boeser finished the season with 25 goals and 50 points in 75 games, but Vancouver missed the postseason. According to Pagnotta, the Canucks have already moved on from Boeser and are targeting replacements.

"The focus in Vancouver seems to be centred around adding more offence up front and replacing Brock Boeser," Pagnotta wrote.

Boeser, for his part, acknowledged a probable exit when discussing his future following the Canucks' elimination from postseason contention.

"Honestly, it's unlikely at this point," Boeser said. "It sucks, it's unfortunate. I'm just trying to play good hockey, and then I'll worry about everything after that.

"We all know it's been a roller coaster of a year. There's been a lot of different things."
