The end is truly in sight for a team that was coming off an impressive performance this time last year.

Thanks to the necessary results on Monday night, the Washington Capitals were officially eliminated from contention for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It’s the first time since the 2022-23 season that the team has failed to qualify for the postseason.

A calendar year ago, we were all impressed by how the Capitals placed themselves back among the NHL’s elite. Along with helping captain Alex Ovechkin chase down Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring record, Washington finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference. While the team didn’t go the distance in the postseason, there was a little hope that the team could run it back with a similar group.

That didn’t happen.

The Capitals won six of their first eight games of the campaign, sitting at 17-9-2 in early December. However, the second half wasn’t nearly as kind to the team in the U.S. capital. A four-game losing skid in January and a stretch of losing seven of nine, Washington found itself stumbling down the Metropolitan Division and conference standings. Even as teams trying to chase down a Wild Card spot started to flounder, the Capitals couldn’t take advantage. Numerous injuries to key players, including the absence of power forward Tom Wilson for several games, hindered the team’s chances ofij returning to the playoffs this year.

It also hasn’t helped that the goaltending hasn’t been as strong. Last season, Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren were considered one of the best tandems in the league. However, while Thompson has been decent, posting a 2.44 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage in 56 starts, Lindgren has struggled, sitting with a 3.52 GAA and .879 SV%.

To make matters worse, there’s the looming possibility that Ovechkin might decide to hang up his skates after the season. The Russian sniper recently stated in an interview that he’s going to make a decision on his future this summer, leading many to wonder what Caps would look like without the GR8.
