John Chayka, the general manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs, must believe highly in the adage: Out with the old, and in with the new. Toronto’s front office directory will look vastly different than it did 24 hours ago. A total of fourteen staff members were let go on Thursday.
Player development and scouting departments took the biggest hits. The most notable names that Chayka and the Maple Leafs have let go are Hayley Wickenheiser (Assistant GM, Player Development), Darryl Metcalf (Assistant GM, Hockey Research and Development), and Mark Leach (Director of Amateur Scouting).
After the news of all the recent releases, GM Chayka put out the following statement. “As part of our ongoing evaluation of the organization, we have made the difficult decision to part ways with some valued colleagues. These decisions were not easy and are not a reflection of the commitment of the impacted people. We are sincerely grateful for everything they have contributed to this organization and wish them nothing but the very best in the future.”
Wickenheiser, Metcalf, and Leach were not the only ones Chayka released from his front office. Dave Morrison (Senior Advisor, Player Personnel), Danielle Goyette (Director, Player Development), Joe Underwood (Player Development), and Michele Moore Davison (Skating Consultant)
On Instagram, Wickenheiser posted the following statement.
“For the past eight seasons, it has been an incredible honor to work for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Over the last few days, John Chayka and I had several discussions about my role moving forward. During those conversations, my expectation was that I would be in a position to continue to have a significant impact within the organization. However, it became clear that his leadership group envisioned a different path,” She wrote. “Since joining the club in 2018, I have been immensely proud of the work our player development team has accomplished. I want to sincerely thank the incredibly talented individuals, coaches, management, and players whom I have been fortunate enough to work alongside over the last eight years. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity, wish the team nothing but the best moving forward, and look forward to the next chapter.”
From the Research and Development department, Wesley Waldner (Director, Hockey Systems), Bruce Peter (Analyst), Andrew Low (Senior Developer), and Cameron Farquharson (Developer) were all released on Thursday.
Last, but not least, the scouting department also took a hit. Chayka has released Scott Carter (Amateur Scouting), Jason Taylor (Pro Scouting), and Mike DeAngelis (College Free Agent Scout).
It has been a crazy offseason for the Maple Leafs. First, Toronto hires John Chayka as the new GM, and Mats Sundin as a Senior Executive Advisor. Then, head coach Craig Berube and some of his coaching staff are let go. Jim Hiller is hired as the new head coach, and he hires a new coaching staff. On the ice, Toronto has made many changes to the roster from last season.
Now, the most recent changes to the front office. It is safe to say that the Maple Leafs have gone through a complete overhaul. It’s crazy what can happen when you miss the playoffs for the first time in a decade. One can only hope that Chayka knows what he’s doing, and this all works out for the best.
