COLUMBUS, Ohio — The climb stalled before it ever truly took shape.

The Columbus Blue Jackets were eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoffs contention this week, closing the book on another season defined more by growing pains than meaningful progress.

For much of the year, Columbus hovered on the outskirts of the Eastern Conference race, never fully collapsing but never seriously threatening, either. The inconsistency that has plagued recent seasons remained — stretches of competitive hockey followed by extended dips that ultimately proved too much to overcome.

By the time the final stretch arrived, the margin for error was gone.

And the Blue Jackets couldn’t respond.

Columbus finished the season with:

  • Fewer than 35 wins
  • A negative goal differential
  • Bottom-third rankings in both power play and penalty kill in the National Hockey League
  • One of the higher goals-against averages in the conference

The issues were familiar. Defensive breakdowns put pressure on the goaltending. Offensive production came in spurts rather than sustained runs. Close games often tilted the wrong direction.

Simply put, there wasn’t enough consistency to stay in the race.

Still, the season was not without purpose.

Young players continued to log significant minutes, gaining experience that the organization hopes will translate into long-term growth. There were flashes — moments where the Blue Jackets looked faster, more structured, more capable.

But those moments were too brief.

Veteran leadership tried to steady the group, but the gap between where Columbus is and where it needs to be remains clear. In a competitive Metropolitan Division, incremental progress isn’t enough.

The result is another early offseason.

The Blue Jackets have now missed the playoffs in consecutive years, underscoring the reality of a rebuild that is still very much in progress. There is talent in place, but the path forward will require development, patience, and likely further roster adjustments.

For now, the focus shifts away from the standings and toward the future.

The season is over.

The Blue Jackets are out.

And the work continues in Columbus.
