Columbus Blue Jackets Training Camp News and Notes

The Columbus Blue Jackets opened training camp on Thursday in what the organization hoped would quietly calm a tumultuous offseason. While things were said to bring order from the chaos, some things have lingered. But it is not all bad, and that’s what we are here to bring you.

Rick Bowness expects Denton Mateychuk to take on an elevated role. Mateychuk had a solid season last year, one that saw the young defender take a big step in his development. As the season progressed, Mateychuk’s all-around game was hard to ignore.

Rick Bowness laid out his expectations for the young, rising Mateychuk: “I expect a big year from him. He had a good year last year, and ideally he will see more power-play time this year. He didn’t get any last year, but he will see it this year; he has earned it.” Mateychuk arrived at camp looking stronger.

Kirill Marchenko was asked if he wants to play hockey in Columbus.

“I want to play hockey. It’s all I can say right now.”

It was reported this summer that F- Kirill Marchenko is unwilling to sign an extension with the Blue Jackets. When he spoke to the media, Marchenko was very non-committal about his future with the organization. In a season in which Columbus is expected to vie for a playoff spot while trying to keep D- Zach Werenski happy, trading a 30-goal, 40-goal-potential player like Marchenko does not seem wise, but if his attitude sours, Don Waddell might have no other option.

Adam Fantilli remains unsigned, which is and is not cause for concern. Zach Werenski said he has spoken to Fantilli and he absolutely wants to be a Columbus Blue Jacket. The player also wants what he and his representatives believe is fair market value. Don Waddell is confident there will be an agreement. But with a shorter training camp and only four preseason games, it would be best to get the top-line center in the fold soon.
