Connor Hellebuyck Losing Money During Suspension

If Connor Hellebuyck doesn’t want to have any sort of anxiety, he probably should stay off the internet.

He likely continues to do so, as his suspension has drawn out as the NHL regular season is well underway. This is in effect for the netminder until further notice after failing to report to the Jets’ training camp, awaiting a move from his trade request. As known prior, Hellebuyck will not receive pay, and his $8.5MM AAV won’t count against Winnipeg’s salary cap for the duration of this suspension. The situation, one already discussed at length, has seen a little more gas put onto the fire of the whole thing.

Already in day 11 of 194 of the NHL season, Hellebuyck has forfeited around $400K of his salary for the 2026-27 season. That is all being tracked on this website called hellebucks.com.

The website is using information provided by the CBA, which states that a Club’s Base Salary must be provided to the league for players listed on the active roster, injured reserve, or non-roster, as provided on page 41 of the current write-up. Hellebuyck fits in none of those categories. Further to this, Hellebuyck is in the final year of a No-Movement Clause on his contract, next season it will be relegate to a 10-team Modified No-Trade list.

The Four-time all-star, three-time Vezina trophy winner as the league’s best goaltender, and 2024-25 league MVP is making $7.5MM per his contract salary for the 2026-27 season. If you take that base salary number and then multiply it by the number of days a player on a contract has missed due to suspension, divided by the total number of days this season, you get the day-by-day number of how much money has been forfeited.

In this case, the math looks like the following: $7.5MM x (12/194) = $463,917. So by the end of day 12, Hellebuyck will have missed out on nearly $470K. That number will continue to increase the longer he holds out, and especially longer if he continues to nurture the desire to go to a specific location.

“I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options,” Hellebuyck said in a statement released by his agent, Ray Petkau earlier. “With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request. My position has not changed. I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.”

Overall, he will earn $59.5MM by the time he’s 38 years old in 2031. Hellebuyck ended the 2025-26 season, posting a 2.86 goals against average and a 0.895 save percentage, the SV% chalking up to the worst of his 11-year NHL career. After three consecutive seasons of 30+ goals saved above expected, he ended 2025-26 stopping -0.3, his worst in that category since 2016-17. All of this culminated in a 23-23-11 record in 57 games started for the Jets.

Winnipeg currently sits in first place in the Pacific Division, at a 3-0-1 record with 7 points behind the offensive lead of Kyle Connor’s five goals and the backstop of newly acquired goaltender Stuart Skinner, who has posted a 2-0-1 record through a 2.62 goals against average and .920 save percentage. Not a bad start for the Jets despite the drama that has revolved around their runway.
