Connor McDavid appears ready to re-sign with the Oilers on a multi-year deal, but according to recent reports, negotiations haven't gotten far this off-season.
This off-season was a crucial one for the Edmonton Oilers, with the team needing to make some changes after falling in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in back-to-back seasons at the hands of the Florida Panthers.
The team have made some intriguing changes, but the biggest bit of business involves captain Connor McDavid, who is eligible to sign a long-term extension this summer.
However, with McDavid being busy with weddings and travel, negotiations haven't gotten far, with NHL Insider Frank Seravalli noting that the two parties haven't yet exchanged numbers on what a potential deal would look like.
'Should people be nervous? Well, my understanding is that numbers haven't even been exchanged yet. They're still very early on in the process. And yet, there doesn't seem to be any hint of nerves or panic or fear from either the Edmonton Oilers' side, as best as I can tell, and also the McDavid side.'
According to Seravalli, fans shouldn't be nervous yet though, as the team got a deal done with Leon Draisaitl late in the off-season in 2024, with the expectation being that a deal will get done here.
For the most part, it's been expected that the superstar forward will sign a short-term extension in the range of 3 or 4 years to remain with the Oilers, and while things haven't gotten rolling yet, once McDavid returns to the city to get preparations started on their Stanley Cup hunt in 2025/26, a deal should come together rather quickly.
