Connor McDavid Reveals Why He Broke Tradition by Touching the Clarence Campbell Bowl

When the Oilers eliminated the Dallas Stars to claim the Clarence Campbell Trophy, Connor McDavid touched it, going against superstitions, and he revealed why.

The Edmonton Oilers were dead serious as they reclaimed their Western Conference throne, downplaying celebrations after taking the series in front of a subdued Dallas Stars faithful.

Unlike last year's teary-eyed crushing defeat bashing, this time everything was cut and dry: the Stanley Cup.

The Oilers have been there before and are no strangers to the pain of falling short. They have their eyes on the prize, and that's reflected in their attitude.

Connor McDavid touched the trophy this year after not touching it last year

Captain Connor McDavid demonstrated that attitude when he proceeded to touch the Clarence Campbell Bowl, something he has shied away from in the last year. Superstition didn't come into it this time.

'We didn't last year, give it a go this year,' McDavid told Sportsnet's Gene Principe. 'I didn't know what was going to happen when we got up there.'

'We're a good team. We're a special team. And we feel good about our game.'

McDavid 's selection was instinctual, as teammate Darnell Nurse admitted he wasn't approached, but he didn't grumble.

'I was just watching,' Nurse said with a sly smile. 'I got to touch it too. It's a small thing, onto the next.'

History shows that a second chance can be fortunate: Sidney Crosby's Penguins kissed the trophy in 2009 after missing it the previous year, and went on to win the Cup in a rematch with Detroit.

The Oilers are matched up against their old foe, the Florida Panthers, for a repeat of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. The champion Panthers once again navigated through without touching the Prince of Wales Trophy.

But this time, they'll face a more mature, more energized Edmonton team, with the series getting underway in Alberta. This one's going to be a thriller.
