The New Jersey Devils fell short of their goal of winning the Stanley Cup this year, but the team did make the postseason. New Jersey was bounced out in the first round of the playoffs by the Carolina Hurricanes, and they just couldn't muster up enough to get over the hump.
As the team heads into the offseason, New Jersey could be preparing to make some changes to the roster. Injuries did hold this group back this year, but the fact remains that they fell short of the ultimate goal.
New Jersey could use an extra push on offense, and one way to make that happen could be via the trade market. The Devils could be active players, and they have been linked with veteran Jonathan Marchessault of the Nashville Predators.
NHL writer Lyle Richardson of Bleacher Report linked the two sides together, mentioning Marchessault as an option for New Jersey.
"Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald could shake up his forward lines to generate more offense....That would give Fitzgerald additional wiggle room to add a scoring forward via free agency or by acquiring someone like Marchessault in a trade," Richardson wrote.
Additionally, James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now reported that New Jersey targeted Marchessault in free agency last year before he landed in Nashville. The team could look to go after him once again, looking for a spark to the unit.
Marchessault scored 21 goals and 35 assists over 78 games for the Predators in his first season with the team. The veteran wing would bring title experience to the table and could be the missing piece to a team that wants to compete for a title.
