Bloomington Bison forward Brett Budgell is heading overseas to the ICEHL to join Villacher SV after spending his first four seasons in North America. He will play alongside former Wheeling Nailers captain Nick Hutchison. Budgell, 24, has seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points in 25 games this season. He is the fourth player to leave the Bison since the season started, joining Renat Dadadzhanov, Daniel Tedesco, and Kohei Sato.
Over the course of his four-year professional career, Budgell has put up 52 goals and 88 assists for 140 points in 180 games in the ECHL while spending time with the Newfoundland Growlers, Iowa Heartlanders, and Bloomington Bison. He had four assists in 10 games during the 2023 Kelly Cup Playoffs with the Growlers. Budgell has five assists in 30 games at the AHL level with the Iowa Wild and Hartford Wolf Pack.
Prior to going pro, the St. John’s, Newfoundland, native began his junior career in the USHL, where he had two goals and two assists for four points in 14 games. He would then head to the QMJHL, where he spent parts of five seasons with the Charlottetown Islanders. In 270 games with the Islanders, he put up 107 goals and 134 assists for 241 points. He would add 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points in 47 QMJHL playoff games. During the 2020-21 season, Budgell led the QMJHL with 43 assists, and the following year, he was named the QMJHL Humanitarian of the Year.
