Earlier today, the Greensboro Gargoyles announced the signings of two new rookies in defenseman Austen May and forward Jack Seymour. In previous days, the Greensboro Gargoyles began a major roster overhaul as they prepare to be more competitive next season.
Austen May is a 22-year-old defenseman from Michigan who most recently played collegiately at Northeastern University. During his time at Northeastern, May scored 12 goals and added 29 assists for 41 points in 121 games. Maye is likely a depth piece for the Gargoyles for the remainder of the season. The young defenseman enters a wide-open competition in Greensboro and will have every opportunity to earn a full-time role next season. As of 03/19/2026, the Gargoyles have five slots on their blueline that are currently occupied, yet with injuries, they have needed their depth pieces to contribute. Both True Crowe and Blake Dangos have impressed in their brief appearances so far this season. Austen May will likely be competing with both of those young defensemen for minutes in the final stretch of the season.
Jack Seymour is a 24-year-old forward from Quebec. Prior to joining the Gargoyles, Seymour captained Holy Cross, where he had 22 goals and 30 assists for 52 points in 117 games. With the recent flurry of transactions by the Gargoyles, Seymour will join a very young group with ample opportunity to endear himself to the fanbase. If Seymour can join the lineup and show a scoring touch, he will certainly earn the opportunity to wear the purple and gold again next season. The most likely spot in the lineup for him is the bottom six, where the Gargoyles will have several new faces when they return home in a few weeks.
It is no secret that the Gargoyles had the most significant trade deadline of any team in the ECHL this season. By trading away Anthony Rinaldi, Patrick Newell, and most impactfully, captain Logan Nelson, the message was clear, next year is the target. The Greensboro Gargoyles have traded all season for “future considerations” and with the ECHL being new to Greensboro, I would like to take the chance to explain what that really means. Essentially, the Gargoyles will be receiving a player in the future who hasn’t been named yet. Most recently, when Logan Nelson was traded to Fort Wayne, it was for future considerations, and now that has turned into forward Josh Groll joining the Gargoyles.
The Gargoyles knew relatively early on that they were on the outside looking in when it came to the playoffs. When Logan Nelson was injured this season, it was catastrophic for the first-year team, yet they never gave up. The Gargoyles are led by Scott Burt, an incredibly resilient man who brings that same mentality to his team. With the Gargoyles having no chance at making the postseason this year, Burt made the wise yet painful decision to become a seller and send impact players to contenders this year in exchange for impact players coming to Greensboro for next season.
Players in the ECHL are on one-year deals and, in the offseason, are always free to join any ECHL club that they would like. It is entirely possible that there is a reunion for some former Gargoyles players down the line. With Greensboro being a new franchise, they do not have a core group of players yet, which makes times like this even trickier to navigate.
So, what do fans have to look forward to? Why keep coming to games? Well, one thing Gargoyles fans have never seen is their team quitting on them. When the Gargoyles were down three goals going into intermission a few weeks ago, the fans gave them a standing ovation going into the locker room, and they battled back and treated those same fans to a miraculous comeback. What you will continue to see night in and night out is resilience. While some fan favorites may be gone, the true heartbeat of the Gargoyles is their fanbase. Greensboro was once starved for hockey, and now that it is back, fans can look forward to it staying and the team embodying the spirit of its home city. Hard work and resilience.
