The Oilers have just broken a long-standing 106-year NHL record by coming back as a road team from being down by three goals in the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Edmonton Oilers pulled off a comeback for the ages Thursday night, coming back from a 3-0 hole and beating the Florida Panthers 5-4 in overtime to tie the Stanley Cup Final at two games each.
Florida dominated early on with two power-play goals by Matthew Tkachuk and one by Anton Lundell, all in the first period.
Edmonton responded by replacing goaltender Stuart Skinner with Calvin Pickard to start the second period, which sparked the turnabout.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Darnell Nurse, and Vasily Podkolzin scored to tie the game at 3-3 after two. Jake Walman put the Oilers ahead 4-3 with 6:24 left in the game, but Sam Reinhart scored with 20 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.
In OT, Leon Draisaitl did it once again. His fourth playoff overtime goal, an NHL single-season record, sealed the victory a little over 11 minutes into overtime.
It was a historic win. Edmonton is the first team since 1919 to come back from three goals down to win on the road in the Stanley Cup Final. It's only the sixth time in league history that a team has done that in the Final.
As a result of the win, Edmonton became the first team in 106 years to comeback from a three-goal deficit and win on the road in the Stanley Cup Final series. The last time the feat happened was in 1919 when the Montreal Canadiens beat the Seattle Metropolitans. It is also only the sixth time in NHL history that a team has come back from a three-goal deficit to win a Stanley Cup Final game.
Amidst the ebbs and flows, Draisaitl complemented his teammates' determination but downplayed his record-breaking heroics.
'We'd like to put ourselves into better situations for ourselves so we don't have to constantly fight back and hang in there and scratch and claw our way back,' Draisaitl told the TNT Sports broadcast. 'But it is a great characteristic of our team. We continue to chip away at it. And today, obviously, not a great start but then we started playing.''I'll take it but (there's a) bigger picture,' Draisaitl added.
The series now returns to Rogers Place in Edmonton for Saturday's Game 5.
