The Oilers have had enough with Sam Bennett and have reached out to the league to complain about his antics in front of the net, prior to Game 3's puck drop.
There is a subtle yet significant off-ice battle being fought in the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers, and it concerns Sam Bennett and his crease-crashing tendencies.
The Oilers have complained to the NHL regarding Bennett's repeated contact with goaltender Stuart Skinner, per TSN. In Game 1, Bennett 'accidentally' fell into Skinner, which led to a failed coach's challenge and Panthers' power play.
'According to TSN's reporting, the Oilers have raised concerns with the NHL about Bennett's repeated collisions with goaltender Stuart Skinner, particularly in front of the crease.'
In Game 2, a very similar play yielded a goalie interference penalty. With one call going each way, confusion is setting in.
The Oilers are frustrated by the lack of clarity and protection for their goalie, especially considering Bennett's growing reputation for dubious falls that always seem to end with contact with the netminder.
Behind closed doors, both clubs are meeting with series supervisor Chris King to present their case.
Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch is reportedly urging the NHL to monitor closely Bennett's behavior around the crease, saying he's going to continue to push the envelope until the referees begin making consistent calls.
TSN's Pierre LeBrun called these discussions all part of the playoff hockey 'chess match' that is played behind the scenes.
And Chris Johnston reported Knoblauch even joked about the physics of it all, noting that Bennett somehow always falls into Skinner, regardless of the direction he's pushed.
It may be gamesmanship, but the Oilers treat it as a serious matter. The Panthers have made Skinner's life miserable in two games, and Edmonton wants the league to address the situation before it gets out of hand.
