As per the '2 Mutts Hockey Podcast', Oilers GM Stan Bowman is on the verge of potentially signing three players to a PTO, one of those being a surprising goalie.
The Edmonton Oilers seem done with trades and significant free-agent signings this summer and are moving on to professional tryouts (PTOs) with training camp on the horizon.
Per the 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast, the club is taking a look around, but no names have been made official as of yet.
PuckPedia offers a list of some notable unsigned players that could be PTO candidates.
Between the pipes, the surprising options include everything from Ilya Samsonov, 28, coming off a $1.8 million deal with Vegas, to older veteran James Reimer, 37, at approximately $1 million.
A couple of other names available are Georgii Romanov, 25, and just-retired Marc-Andre Fleury, though he'd be a long shot.
At the front, a few forwards are noticeable. Centers Robby Fabbri, 29 ($4.0M AAV), and Luke Kunin, 27, are unrestricted, although Jack Roslovic, 28 ($2.8M), is likely to sign outright in the near future.
The Oilers, who are already deep at center with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Adam Henrique, and Curtis Lazar, might instead turn to the wing.
Left-wing possibilities would be Brock McGinn, 31, Tomas Tatar, 34, and veteran Max Pacioretty, who has been mentioned in Edmonton's context this summer. Christian Fischer, 28, Kevin Rooney, 32, and Victor Olofsson, 30, are also possibilities.
One interesting candidate is former Oiler Klim Kostin, named by The Hockey News' Jim Parsons as the 'most likely' PTO candidate.
Klim Kostin has spoken publicly about how much he loves Edmonton, attended playoff games as a fan, and was an avid follower of the team even when he was playing for another team.
As the Minnesota Wild have already signed Jack Johnson to a PTO, we should hear more announcements in the near future.
Edmonton has two major selling points to attract tryouts: an honest chance at the Stanley Cup and superstar linemates who can inflate their statistics. Look for PTO invitations to surface over the next few weeks.
