The Edmonton Oilers previously signalled they want to keep Matthew Savoie developing in the AHL this year, but a call up may soon be in the cards according to several Oilers analysts.
Matthew Savoie is the Oilers prospect with the highest potential to be a star, but the team wanted to keep him consistently playing in the AHL this year after playing for 4 different teams last year in the Buffalo Sabres organization.
Even though the Oilers wanted to keep Savoie in the AHL, his play has continued to demand a call up to the NHL. According to analyst Alan Mitchell on Lowetide, Matthew Savoie could see a call up in the near future.
A quick word about Matthew Savoie: He scored again last night, and I wouldn't be surprised if he sees a quick look in the NHL before the deadline. I don't believe he'll get a Noah Philp level look (that appears to be a full audition leading up to the deadline) but two or three games could happen.- Alan Mitchell
Oilers analyst Daniel-Nugent Bowman also speculated today that Savoie's great play in the AHL recently could warrant a short call up before the playoffs, at least to evaluate him.
They also have prospect Matt Savoie. Bowman said earlier this season that he believes Savoie will factor into the equation... Under the right circumstances, there could be a Holloway-like regular season or playoff insertion into the lineup.- Daniel Nugent-Bowman
The Oilers acquired Matthew Savoie from the Buffalo Sabres as a high-end prospect, but with declining stock after a rough season after being drafted 9th overall. Now with some consistency in the Oilers organization, Savoie is showing his potential.
Savoie's stock fell last year as he played for four different teams in three different leagues, never finding a rhythm to play.
This season fully with the Condors, Savoie has found his offensive game with 11 goals and 28 points in 37 games, while also being a great defensive player.
Oilers fans should be excited for the prospect of calling up Savoie this season, but also his progression as a prospect entirely. This could turn out to be the Oilers totally robbing the Buffalo Sabres.
