Nearly a year after the tragic deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, Meredith Gaudreau has shared an emotional birthday message that quickly spread across the hockey world.
Johnny, known to fans as "Johnny Hockey," would have turned 32 on Wednesday. Meredith marked the occasion with a touching post and a televised interview, using the moment to both remember her husband and push forward a cause in his and Matthew's honour.
Speaking to Good Morning America, she described the personal toll of last August's tragedy, when the Gaudreau brothers were struck by an alleged drunk driver in New Jersey just hours before serving as groomsmen at their sister's wedding.
"Half of me, the best part of me, died that day too," she said. "I'm just trying to be double now for my kids, even though I'm half of who I was."
Meredith and Matthew's widow, Madeline, have now launched the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation to support the hockey community and preserve the brothers' legacy.
As The Columbus Dispatch noted, the foundation aims to channel the Gaudreaus' passion for the sport into opportunities for others.
Johnny spent a decade in the NHL, eight seasons with the Calgary Flames before joining the Columbus Blue Jackets. His speed, creativity, and infectious energy made him a fan favourite and an inspiration to young players.
I think Meredith's ability to transform grief into a mission of giving back is as courageous as it is moving.
The alleged driver, Sean Higgins, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene. The case remains ongoing.
