Etienne Morin’s season ends after Moncton loss to London in Memorial Cup semi-final

One of the two Calgary Flames prospects playing at the 2025 Memorial Cup saw their season come to an end on Friday night, as Etienne Morin’s Moncton Wildcats lost in the tournament’s semi-final outing to the London Knights by a 5-2 score.

The Knights were the slightly better team for the majority of the contest, scoring first and leading the game in shots (and puck possession) for the duration. The Wildcats hung around due to some strong special teams play, including two power play markers, but it wasn’t enough to knock off a perennial junior hockey powerhouse in the Knights.

4:07 into the first period, the Knights opened the scoring, as Landon Sim cashed in on a pretty slick wrap-around chance that beat Moncton netminder Mathis Rousseau to make it 1-0.

However, the Wildcats cashed in on a late power play to tie things up at 1-1, as 2025 NHL Draft prospect Caleb Desnoyers took a pass from Morin and then fired a shot past London’s Austin Elliott to tie the game.

(London out-shot Moncton 18-5 in the opening period. Yeesh.)

Anyway, 5:24 into the second period, on their 22nd shot, the Knights retook the lead. This time, Easton Cowan found Denver Barkey with open with a slick pass, and Barkey beat Rousseau with a one-timer to make it 2-1 London.

But midway through the period, on another power play, the Wildcats tied things up. This time, Dyllan Gill blasted a wrister from the point bar-and-in past Elliott to tie the game at 2-2.

Once again, Moncton survived a period and remained tied. But their luck ran out in the third period, as London bore down on their chances.

3:35 into the third period, Sam Dickinson joined the rush and used his speed on the outside to get a bit of space ahead of Morin. He chucked a nice pass cross the net-front area to a streaking Blake Montgomery, who beat Rousseau to give London a 3-2 lead.

As the clock began to wind down, Jesse Nurmi scored off a face-off win in the Moncton zone to give London a 4-2 edge.

Cowan added a late empty-net goal to give London a definitive 5-2 win. Shots overall ended up at 37-23 London.

How’d Morin do?

In his final game of the season – and potentially his final major junior game ever, considering he’s expected to go pro in the fall – Morin played a ton, serving on the top pairing with Dylan MacKinnon. He had an assist on Moncton’s first goal, but he was also on the ice for three London goals. He finished with four shots and was minus-3.

For the tournament overall, Morin had three points and a minus-3 rating over four games.

Up next

The next and final contest in the 2025 Memorial Cup tournament is the championship game on Sunday! The Knights will clash with Andrew Basha and the Medicine Hat Tigers for the championship! And considering that Basha is expected to test out pro hockey in the fall, this could end up being his final major junior game, too.

You can catch the final major junior game of 2024-25 on TSN on Sunday, starting at 5 p.m. MT.
