Felony Charge Dropped Against Penn State Star Gavin McKenna

Centre County prosecutors have announced they will drop the felony aggravated assault charge against Penn State men’s hockey star Gavin McKenna, a projected top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. This is huge news for McKenna and the Penn State Hockey program.

The decision comes after a review of video evidence from the January 31 incident outside Doggie’s Pub in downtown State College. District Attorney Bernie Cantorna’s office said the footage does not support the felony allegation, which claimed McKenna acted with intent to cause serious bodily injury or with extreme indifference to human life. The charge carried a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

McKenna Dodges a Huge Bullet

McKenna, an 18-year-old freshman forward for the Nittany Lions, had been arraigned earlier this week on the felony, along with misdemeanor simple assault and summary offenses for harassment and disorderly conduct. Authorities said he punched another man twice in the face during an altercation, leaving the victim with multiple jaw fractures that required surgery.

With the felony removed, McKenna now faces much lighter penalties. In Pennsylvania, a second-degree misdemeanor simple assault carries a maximum of two years in prison and a $5,000 fine, though outcomes often depend on circumstances, plea deals, or diversion programs. The summary offenses are minor and typically result in fines.

The development is a major relief for McKenna, Penn State hockey, and NHL scouts, who consider him one of the top prospects in the upcoming draft. The incident occurred just hours after Penn State’s outdoor game at Beaver Stadium against Michigan State.

McKenna’s preliminary hearing is still set for February 11 at the Centre County Courthouse. Penn State and McKenna’s representatives have not issued further comments.
