With the 176th pick, the Calgary Flames selected forward Aidan Lane out of St. Andrew’s College. Being another winger in the Flames’ system, Lane has the potential to turn into another value pick chosen in the later rounds. Let’s further explore who Lane is and how he potentially fits into the Flames’ future.
Lane played high school hockey for the majority of this season, being part of one of the top hockey programs in Canada with St. Andrews. He was among the team’s leading scorers, notching 34 goals and 86 points in 55 games. His dominant performance earned him a stint with the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers and the OHL’s Brampton Steelheads, where he was a point-per-game player in 13 games.
2024-25 | St Andrew’s College | U18 AAA | 55 GP | 34 G | 52 A | 86 P |
Green Bay Gamblers | USHL | 2 GP | 0 G | 0 A | 0 P | |
Brampton Steelheads | OHL | 13 GP | 7 G | 6 A | 13 P |
Lane’s build at 6’2” and 192 lbs allows him to play much like a power forward. He’s physical and forechecks hard, but also has a great offensive mind. His skills in playmaking and goal scoring also enable him to become a threat in front of the net and in tight areas of the ice.
As for his development, Lane has already gained some experience playing in multiple levels of hockey. He’ll now have the chance to test his skills in the NCAA, as he’s committed to Harvard for the 2025-26 season.
Lane has been drafted by a team that has many fellow NCAA prospects. The Flames certainly believe that college can bring the best out of a player, and they view Lane as another potential individual who can make a big impact in college hockey.
As a winger, Lane will face plenty of competition. The Flames’ prospect pool at his position has only deepened following this year’s draft, with the organization now boasting a range of players capable of potentially making the show. Lane currently projects as a middle-six forward in today’s NHL, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of him exceeding those expectations.
As hinted, Lane being a sixth-round pick means that the road to the NHL will be long for him. However, going to Harvard and starting his NCAA career will help to progress his development quite a bit.
Drafting Lane in the sixth round was good work by the Flames. Overall, my views on Lane are quite positive as his skill set indicates great potential. With that being said, the competition for wingers within the Flames system is quite high. Lane is pretty low on the Flames’ depth chart, but I think he can surprise a lot of people. We’ll see where the road takes him as time moves forward.
