Flames announce 2026-27 prospects training camp roster

Friends, welcome back to Calgary Flames hockey.

Well, prospects training camp, at least.

The Flames have announced their roster and schedule for prospects camp. This is the first year of the new collective bargaining agreement, which features more regular season games but has cut the pre-season in half. Combined with just a single prospects game – Mon., Sept. 14 at home against Edmonton, game at 6 p.m. MT, tickets are $10 – means that there’s fairly limited runway for youngsters to make some noise.

Here’s a rundown of the 25 players slated to attend prospects training camp.

Goaltenders (4)

Not Here: Tobias Trejbal (University of Massachusetts, NCAA), Yegor Yegorov (Miami University, NCAA)

Three of the four goalies in camp are all, coincidentally, Russians. (C of Red? More like C of Red Army, amirite?) Sergeev and Zarubin are likely to start the season as the goalie tandem with the Wranglers, while AHL signees Konopsky and Say seem destined for Rapid City. If nothing else, this camp gives this group a chance to get rolling.

Defensemen (7)

Not Here: Carson Carels (North Dakota, NCAA), Eric Jamieson (Denver, NCAA), Henry Mews (Michigan, NCAA)

This is a pretty unique group, with a hefty dose of WHL influence – Hurtig captained the Hitmen last season, while Laylin, Leander and Phillips are debuting in the Dub this season – and NCAA influence – Anderson captained the NCAA champions last season, while Wiebe impressed with NoDak before joining the Flames.

Roughly half of these blueliners are headed back to junior, but you can mix and match this group a bit and get all sorts of fun pairings.

Forwards (14)

Not Here: Trevor Hoskin (Merrimack College, NCAA), Aidan Lane (Harvard, NCAA), Jaden Lipinski (Maine, NCAA), Cade Littler (North Dakota, NCAA), Yan Matveiko (Zvezda Moskva, VHL), Luke Misa (Penn State, NCAA), Cullen Potter (Michigan State, NCAA), Cole Reschny (North Dakota, NCAA), Alan Shaikhlislamov (Tolpar Ufa, MHL), Theo Stockselius (Djurgardens IF, SHL), Ethan Wyttenbach (Quinnipiac, NCAA)

This forward group might lack some of the organization’s top college prospects, but there are some really fascinating players in here. Gridin was excellent for the Flames late last season. Castagna and Gross were both very good two-way college centres. Katolicky was a projected first-rounder before a rough draft year health-wise. Basha was superb for Medicine Hat down the stretch. Suniev figured out how to use his great shot at the AHL level. Harrington was a buzz-saw for Spokane. Oh, and Joe Iginla, too.

Combined with some pretty fun players in on try-outs, and there’s a really fun mix of players in this camp up front.
