Flames’ Jake Bean to undergo surgery; out indefinitely

Bean, 27, has missed the Flames’ last four games as he was being evaluated for his injury. He’s been a frequent healthy scratch for Calgary this season, as the Flames have wanted to get younger defensemen such as Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz into the lineup.

In 16 games played this season, the Calgary native has a goal and an assist while averaging just under 16 minutes of ice time per game.

Bean is in the second season of a two-year, $3.5 million deal with the Flames. Last season, he put up just two goals and five assists for seven points in 64 games, while averaging just over 15 minutes of ice time per game.

Initially drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes 13th overall from the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Bean spent three years with Carolina’s organization. He won the Calder Cup as an AHL champion with the Hurricanes’ affiliate Charlotte Checkers in 2019, and became a full-time NHLer in the 2020-21 season, when he registered a goal and 11 assists in 42 games.

Ahead of the 2021-22 season, Bean was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a second-round pick. In three seasons with Columbus, he tallied 12 goals and 32 assists for 44 points in 153 games. His 2022-23 season was limited to just 14 games due mostly to a shoulder injury.

Calgary is currently tied for the second-worst point total in the NHL, with 30 points through 34 games. They kick off a stretch in which they’ll play seven of eight games at home when they host the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.
