The National Hockey League season is just around the corner, but many Calgary Flames’ prospects’ seasons are in full swing.

This is the Sept. 29- Oct. 6 edition of the Flames prospect round-up, where we look at how Flames prospects have done on a weekly basis. Specifically, we’ll look at players playing overseas, in junior hockey, or the college levels, as the American Hockey League prospects will have an article of their own in the Wranglers recap.

Let’s take a look at how the Flames’ prospects have done over the last week or so!

Cullen Potter

Cullen Potter and the Arizona State Sun Devils began their season with a back-to-back against Luke Misa and the Penn State Nittany Lions. It didn’t go well.

Midway through the first period of the season opener, Gavin McKenna picked up his first assist of his collegiate career, before picking up a second late in the first. The Sun Devils fought back to take a 3-2 lead, with Potter getting the primary assist on the game-tying goal, but it was all Penn State from there in a 6-3 victory.

In the second game of the season, Potter picked up another assist on the game-opening goal, as the Sun Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Once again, the Nittany Lions scored a bunch of unanswered goals, as they won 4-2 in the end.

Next up for the Sun Devils is an in-season tournament next weekend.

Theo Stöckselius

To say it was a busy week for Theo Stöckselius would be an understatement. The Flames’ 2025 second-round pick made his Swedish Hockey League debut, playing two games for Djurgårdens IF, a 5-3 loss to Rögle BK and a 5-3 win against the Malmö Redhawks. The 18-year-old was held pointless in both games.

In Stöckselius’ absence, Djurgårdens IF U20 fell 4-3 to Timrå IK U20 in a shootout. However, he returned in their 5-2 victory over Brynäs IF U20, scoring his first goal of the season. As it stands, Stöckselius has a goal and eight points in six U20 games and has been held pointless through two SHL games.

Stöckselius’ Western Hockey League rights were also traded, as the Calgary Hitmen traded some picks to the Seattle Thunderbirds for the Swedish centre. It appears he’ll remain in Sweden for now, with Djurgårdens IF U20 taking on AIK U20 on Wednesday.

Mace’o Phillips

Mace’o Phillips and the Green Bay Gamblers played two games in United States Hockey League action recently, defeating the USA U18 Development Team 2-1 in overtime and 5-1. In their 2-1 overtime victory, the left-shot defenceman picked up his first point of the season, an assist.

This coming week, the Gamblers take on the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday and Saturday at home.

Ethan Wyttenbach

Ethan Wyttenbach and Quinnipiac University began their 2025-26 season, defeating Boston College 4-3 thanks to three second period goals. Wyttenbach also picked up his first career collegiate point, an assist on Quinnipiac’s second goal.

Like Cullen Potter and the Arizona State Sun Devils, Quinnipiac will participate in the Ice Breaker Tournament over the coming weekend, with their first game coming on Saturday against Alaska-Fairbanks.

Jakob Leander

Jakob Leander and HV71 U20 played one game this past week, a 5-2 victory over Linköping HC U20 to move to 3-3-1 this season. Once again, the Flames’ seventh-round pick in the 2025 draft was held pointless, giving him two assists in seven games this season.

This coming week, Leander and HV71 U20 play two road games, facing Färjestad BK U20 on Saturday and Örebro HK U20 on Sunday.

Yan Matveiko

Yan Matveiko’s impressive start to the season has continued. In Krasnaya’s 4-3 shootout loss to AKM-Yunior, the Flames’ seventh-round selection in 2025 picked up a goal and an assist. In their 1-0 victory over HC Kapitan, Matveiko picked up the lone goal of the game, giving him six goals and 14 points in 11 games. Last season, the 19-year-old scored just 10 goals and 24 points in 42 games.

This week, Krasnaya Armiya and Matveiko host Kirill Zarubin and the Mikhailov Academy for two games on Thursday and Friday.

Jacob Battaglia

Jacob Battaglia and the Kingston Frontenacs are off to a strong start to their season, winning four of their first six games to give them a 4-1-1 record. Both games this past week were victories for the Eastern Ontario team, as they defeated the Oshawa Generals 5-2 on Friday and the Erie Otters 1-0 on Sunday.

It was a rather quiet week for the Flames’ prospect, as Battaglia picked up a lone assist in the Frontenacs’ 5-2 victory. So far this season, the 2024 second-round selection has two goals and four points in four games.

This week, the Frontenacs play a home-and-home against the Peterborough Petes. Thursday’s game will be in Peterborough, while Friday’s game will be in Kingston.

Henry Mews

Henry Mews and the University of Michigan Wolverines thumped Mercyhurst in their two games. In the season opener, the Wolverines won 11-1. Sadly, there is no mercy rule for Mercyhurst. Mews had two assists in this game and picked up two more in Michigan’s 7-0 victory the following day, also against Mercyhurst.

It’s a good start to the right-shot defenceman’s college career, as he has four assists through two games. This week, the Wolverines play two games against the Providence Friars on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11, a step up in competition.

Kirill Zarubin

Kirill Zarubin and the Mikhailov Academy played two games this past week, a 3-2 shootout victory over Kuznetskie Medvedi and a 4-2 victory over Irbis. Zarubin played both games, saving 27 of 29 shots in the shootout victory and stopping 18 of 20 shots in their 4-2 victory.

For the season, the Flames’ third-round pick in 2024 has a .926 save percentage and 2.24 goals against average in six games. Next up for the Mikhailov Academy are two games against Yan Matveiko and Krasnaya Armiya on Thursday and Friday. On Monday, they play a road game against JHC Spartak. It’s worth noting that Monday’s game won’t be against JHC Spartak MHA, Yegor Yegorov’s team.

Trevor Hoskin

After finishing his 2024-25 season with Niagara University, Trevor Hoskin transferred to Merrimack College, making his debut in a 4-0 loss to UMass Lowell on Friday. Hoskin was held off the scoresheet, but was a -2 with no shots. Merrimack has an opportunity to enact revenge, as they host Lowell on Friday.

Luke Misa

As stated earlier in the article, Luke Misa and the Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils in both games they played, but how did the Flames’ prospect on the Nittany Lions do? Well, Misa was held off the scoresheet in both games, finishing with a -1.

Misa will have a chance to pick up his first college point, as Penn State hosts Clarkson University for a back-to-back game on Thursday and Friday.

Hunter Laing

Hunter Laing had a strong pre-season with the Flames, and his strong play has extended to his start with the Western Hockey League’s Saskatoon Blades. On Friday, they defeated the Red Deer Rebels 4-2, with Laing scoring once, his second goal of the season. In their 6-3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday, Laing scored twice, giving him four goals and five points in four games.

This week, the Blades host the Vancouver Giants on Tuesday, head to Swift Current to take on the Broncos on Friday, and host the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday.

Yegor Yegorov

This week, Yegor Yegorov and JHC Spartak-MAX played two games, defeating Krylya Sovetov 5-2 but falling 5-4 in overtime to Sakhalinskie Akuly. Yegorov started both games, stopping 45 of 47 shots against Sovetov, his former team. He had a rough game in the overtime loss, as he stopped 30 of 35 shots for an .857 save percentage. So far this season, the 20-year-old has a .914 save percentage and 3.19 goals against average.

It’s a busy week for JHC Spartak-MAX, as they host Taifun for two games on Wednesday and Thursday, before facing off against Amurskie Tigry on Sunday, also at home.

Axel Hurtig

This past week, the Calgary Hitmen played two games. On Saturday, the Hitmen were soundly defeated by the Medicine Hat Tigers, falling 7-1. They got back in the win column with a 5-2 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Sunday. Hurtig was a -3 and had four shots in Saturday’s game before missing Sunday’s game.

Listed as day-to-day, it’s unclear if the left-shot defenceman will be back in the lineup when the Hitmen host the Tigers on Friday, their lone game this week.
