Former Maple Leafs Goaltender Michael Hutchinson Signs One-Year, Two-Way Deal with Red Wings

The 33-year-old goaltender began training camp on a professional tryout with the Red Wings before signing a minor-league deal with their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Hutchinson has played 13 games with the Griffins, winning five games and posting a .895 save percentage. Detroit's goaltenders — Ville Husso and Alex Lyon — are both injured, and it doesn't appear either will be back until after Christmas.

Detroit also signed James Reimer to a one-year deal on July 1, 2023. He and Hutchinson look to be the Red Wings' goaltenders for the foreseeable future.

Hutchinson had two stints in the Maple Leafs organization. Toronto acquired him from the Florida Panthers in late December 2018. 

He would appear in 20 NHL games and 27 with the Toronto Marlies throughout two seasons before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Calle Rosen in Feb. 2020.

The Barrie, Ontario native would re-sign with Toronto in Oct. 2020, inking a two-year, two-way deal worth $1.45 million. He played eight games for the Maple Leafs during the 2021 bubble season, finishing the year with a .919 save percentage.

Hutchinson—in 2021-22—would only play two NHL games but 28 with the Marlies, where he put up 11 wins and a .899 save percentage.
