Former Maple Leafs Player Calls Out Mitch Marner’s ‘Sympathy’ Strategy After Toronto Exit

Former Toronto Maple Leafs player Jay Rosehill has come out swinging against Mitch Marner following the winger’s first public appearance as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Speaking on the "Leafs Morning Take" podcast, Rosehill ripped into Marner’s comments from his interview with TSN's Mark Masters about receiving a death threat and needing private security in Toronto for two weeks before completing a sign-and-trade to Vegas on July 1.

"I’m all for moving on from the Mitch Marner saga, but how do you not talk about this?" Rosehill said. "In my mind, this is what happened: Months and months after he leaves the Toronto Maple Leafs, he tracks down 'Leafs media' to have a sit-down so that he can tell everyone how outrageously he overreacted to a comment made online that now may or may not have existed in the first place in order to get sympathy from Leafs fans, many of whom feel like he has left them high and dry.”

Marner told Masters that his home address was leaked online after the Maple Leafs' playoff elimination and that he hired round-the-clock security for two weeks before moving out of Toronto.

“I get home, I’m pretty disappointed, pretty devastated at that (elimination). Then I get a phone call, probably five minutes after,” Marner said. “I think it was my wife’s father. He goes, ‘We’ve got people sending us screenshots of a guy posting your address online, saying that if people want to come pay us a visit and saying their goodbyes in a quotation way, here’s the address.’”

Rosehill, however, questioned both the timing and intent of Marner's revelation, contrasting his behavior to that of former teammate William Nylander.

"How does (Marner) constantly put his foot in his mouth, man?" Rosehill said. "I get where the guy's coming from almost all of the time, but he spins it in such a way where it just leaves him so open to scrutiny.

"Being a new father, I understand that you're protective of your family. I get there's nothing (bad) about it, that's cool. But, you know, a comment on a thread or whatever, and you’re hiring 24-hour security for two weeks? Meanwhile, (Nylander) is just riding the subway with the common folk. Odd ..."

Mitch Marner's Agent, Maple Leafs GM Enter the Picture

Rosehill didn't stop there, also accusing Marner’s camp, led by agent Darren Ferris, of trying to reshape his image following criticism over his exit and his recent comments about Toronto fans.

“His agent's doing a media tour with podcasts and stuff," Rosehill said. "(Marner) has trouble leaving it alone."

Meanwhile, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving addressed the subject separately at the league’s preseason meetings on Tuesday.

“In our business, your No. 1 priority is looking after your players, and I think we do a really good job of it,” Treliving said. “We always take every precaution necessary to make sure our guys are looked after.”

As part of the Toronto-Vegas sign-and-trade involving Marner, the former Leafs winger signed an eight-year, $96 million contract with the Golden Knights.
